Roll Sushi by Ippudo: New takeaway sushi bar concept at Marina Bay Sands with 16 different sushi varieties
Planning a date this weekend? We’ve got an idea — how about a romantic picnic along Marina Bay Sands, where you can savour a meal while admiring the picturesque cityscape by the bay?
We think the new Roll Sushi by Ippudo, an all-new takeaway sushi bar concept by the beloved Japanese ramen brand, fits in well with the plan.
Roll Sushi by Ippudo opened its doors on September 23, marking Ippudo’s first-ever sushi bar worldwide. The concept is all about serving quick, bite-sized eats that you can enjoy on the go, while getting your sushi fix in.
You can find the takeaway kiosk on the basement level of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (right beside the Rasapura Masters food court). It shares a partial space with the original Ippudo restaurant.
Ippudo’s original storefront has been redesigned with vibrant signage that showcases the different dishes at Roll Sushi by Ippudo. It’s also decked with a counter that displays a mesmerising spread of sushi ingredients — so diners can see every detail that goes into preparing their orders.
While Roll Sushi by Ippudo’s dishes are intended to be takeaway only, you’re also able to enjoy its sushi in Ippudo’s air-conditioned dine-in area if you’d like — these will be subject to GST and service charges, though.
There are 16 different sushi combinations to tickle your fancy, which come in two different formats: Maki (a traditional cylindrical sushi roll sliced into bite-sized pieces) and tatami (a sushi-sandwich hybrid).
If you want to get creative, you can also customise your own sushi rolls for S$18 each, where you can select your preferred sushi base (tatami or maki), three fillings, three sprinkles (think tempura flakes, tobiko and garlic chips) and a sauce.
For those feeling bougie, you can also elevate your dish with extra premium ingredients, such as unagi, wagyu beef and salmon.
Sushi galore
Mentaiko lovers will fall head over heels for the signature mentaiko spam tatami (S$16) — a chunky dish stuffed with a crispy, deep-fried spam katsu, shredded cabbage, and Japanese rolled omelette. It’s then drizzled in an umami-filled tonkatsu sauce and creamy mayo for a burst of sweet-savoury flavour.
Those who enjoy lighter flavours will relish the Island Sunrise tatami (S$17) — a classic staple that highlights kakiage (deep-fried vegetable tempura). Balancing the crunchiness of the tempura is a marinated soft-boiled egg with a slightly gooey yolk. Tucked into the sandwich are also bits of avocado and aromatic shiso leaves.
We can foresee the Samurai Spice roll (S$17) being a hit with the masses. It’s an eye-catching dish generously laden with chilli mayo, chives and bits of deep-fried enoki mushroom on the top, with an assortment of ingredients embedded within the sushi underneath. Inside are fresh chunks of salmon, shrimp and crab sticks — the perfect combination for seafood lovers.
The vivid, pink-hued Tokyo Crunch roll (S$23) is a decadent option starring toro (tuna) tartare, avocado and cucumber. It’s also draped with tangy red onion pickles for that hint of zest and sprinkled with crunchy tempura flakes, then finished with a mild wasabi mayo and sweet vinegar sauce.
Final thoughts
If you’re in the area and in the mood for sushi, Roll Sushi by Ippudo serves up unique, easy-to-munch options. However, if you’re on a tighter budget, note that its prices aren’t the friendliest.
