It’s that time of the year when things are still a little fuzzy and you’re in a bit of a post-festive season daze, unsure of what date it really is and where you’re supposed to be.

Don’t worry, we’re right there with you.

As we all ease into the first working day of 2024, we thought we’ll take a look back at our top stories for the year newly passed and see which ones really got you, our readers, really hungry.

Here’s HungryGoWhere’s 2023 recap of our top stories for the year:

1. Top story: Good Year Seafood

We may have featured many second-generation hawkers in 2023, but no story went viral like GoodYear Seafood’s Geraldine Peh.

The plucky 29-year-old lady boss shared the struggles she faced during the Covid-19 pandemic and how she remained optimistic throughout the tough period.

If there’s anything we’re taking into 2024, it’s this no-frills quip from Geraldine herself: “If there’s a will, there’s a way — you’ll figure it out.”

We probably didn’t need data to tell us this, but it’s clear that fried chicken reigns supreme.

2023’s top food news story is the perfect culmination of what Singapore foodies love best — fried chicken and an unlimited buffet.

For International Fried Chicken Day last year, KFC Singapore launched its first-ever unlimited chicken feast in Singapore from July 5 to 7, where fried chicken fans could get their fill of 10 food items off KFC’s menu for a tidy sum of S$18.95.

Judging by the rave response, we can only hope this feast makes a comeback this year, maybe with more items and outlets included?

2023 marked the return of all things retro, with cafes like Lou Shang and Great Nanyang Heritage Cafe opening to much fanfare.

So it really wasn’t surprising for us that our guide on old-school bakeries made it to the top of your most-loved food guides for our 2023 recap.

In fact, I think I’ll be grabbing some waffles from the old-school bakery in my neighbourhood right after I get this article out. How about paying a visit to yours (with those newly-minted 2024 CDC vouchers)?

4. Most-read review: Honbo

From Shake Shack to Five Guys and now Honbo Burger, Singapore foodies have shown that wherever the burger’s from, they’ll snap it right up.

(Did you know that our most-read review in 2022 was also a burger spot?)

Honbo is a Hong Kong burger chain that first opened its doors in Singapore in July 2023.

Founder Michael Chan says its burgers are classic American-style burgers designed for the “modern Asian palate”.

Want to know what we thought? Read our review to see if its smashed burgers made the cut.

If you’re really just craving for an ordinary burger, how about trying McDonald’s new sweet ‘n sour burger

5. Hottest food trend: Loaded bombolonis

What’s better than a donut? A fluffy, loaded donut that is.

For the uninitiated, a bomboloni is an upgraded donut — round, deliciously sugar-coated and stuffed with some of the most decadent pastry creams.

Our resident pastry-lover rounds up 12 places in Singapore to get your bomboloni fix in this sugar-filled article.

That new year’s resolution to stay away from sugar this year? We’ll save that for after the article — thank you very much.
