M&T: Quality French cheese at Tanjong Pagar farm-to-table cheese boutique with S$5 mini cheeseboard
What do you think of when people mention French cuisine? Probably pastries, wine and cheese right?
Truly, the French are some of the biggest cheese lovers on the planet and if you ever wondered why, here’s a chance to have a taste for yourself — at M&T (Monts & Terroirs), the newest cheese boutique at Tanjong Pagar.
M&T is housed in a simple, but cosy space located in the outdoor dining enclave on Guoco Tower’s first floor, but it has quite a unique concept.
It’s actually Singapore’s first farm-to-table cheese concept and is masterminded by a collective of cheese producers from France itself.
Specifically, from the French mountains, covering locales such as Swiss-bordering Jura (known for its Comte and Gruyere) and the Pyrenees Basque region (known for its Ossau-Iraty).
Leaning into the collective’s expertise in the beloved dairy product, M&T houses a boutique that offers cheese and other products for retail, as well as a bistro where cheese is heavily featured on the menu.
All aboard the cheese board
With all that in mind, getting one of M&T’s cheeseboards is probably the best move for any cheese lover.
The French mountains five cheeses selection (S$36) is a great way to sample as much cheese as possible — it comes with a bread and butter basket, as well as nuts and jams, too!
In particular, we love the different types of Comte — where the profiles range from bright and fruity, to deep and chocolatey — and the Fourme d’Ambert, a type of blue cheese that’s less pungent and more accessible to the average diner.
If you find yourself at M&T from 3pm to 6pm, it also offers a pretty damn good-value Happy Hour menu, where wines are served by the glass at S$10 and below.
There’s a good variety, including chardonnay (S$9), prosecco (S$9), shiraz (S$9) and rose (S$9).
To top it off, you can also get yourself some cheese toppers for S$5. That’s both cheese and wine for just S$15.
Toppers are a M&T special and essentially mini cheeseboards topped on your wine glasses, each stocked up with wedges of Comte cheese. Good for nibbling and sipping!
M&T Bistro
M&T also has a pretty comprehensive bistro menu offering a slew of cooked dishes that incorporate the collective’s own cheeses.
The menu differs depending on the time of the day, but if you’re there during lunch, consider the le croque monsieur (S$18), which is touted as an M&T signature.
It’s got everything you want in the classic French sandwich: A lot of cheese.
M&T also has the heftier grassfed beef burger (S$26) on the menu, if the sandwich isn’t quite enough.
Comte cheese, caramelised onions and a juicy medium-rare patty? Most burger lovers would vibe with this.
Dinner brings on even heavier proteins that are sure to fill you up, including the signature le cordon bleu maison (S$34) and low-cooked lamb shank on bone (S$38).
Once again, the former was loaded with cheese (though we did find the chicken a bit dry), while the former was cooked till tender and soft, and served on a bed of cheesy mashed potato.
You’ll probably notice one often recurring word throughout this article. It’s the word “cheese”.
So if you’re the kind who is obsessed with cheese, we think it’s probably not a bad idea to pop by M&T — be it for the cheese-infused dishes or just to buy some good Comte home!
