Mondo: Amoy’s new gelato bar has fun gelato cocktail floats and flavours such as pineapple makgeolli & blue cheese

Evan Mua | August 28, 2025

It’s a hard life for sweet-toothed folks who work in the buzzy Telok Ayer area — sure, there’s plenty of good food and great booze, but sweets are little more scarce.

But it looks like the universe has heard all their prayers: 2025 has seen, not just one, but two gelato spots opening in the area.

First, it was the wildly viral Gelato Messina, and now it’s the fun and vibey Mondo at Amoy Street.

What’s different from its closest competitor is that Mondo is all about fun — plenty of it.

The flavours are creative and it offers a diverse assortment of alcoholic ice cream flavours, and it really leans into the “bar” aspect of “gelato bar”.

Besides alcoholic ice cream, you can straight up get cocktails here. And Mondo doesn’t just do usual margaritas and negronis, either.

Here, customers can make cocktail floats with their choice of gelato.

Another cool trait of Mondo is the decor — most local gelato shops opt for brighter and more vibrant interiors.

However, the space here is sleeker, filled with plush leather cushions and a darker palette that’s reminiscent of an intimate cocktail bar.

But there’s an element of cheekiness, too. The dim, bar-like decor is juxtaposed against small playful touches, such as smiley-face light fixtures and an LED menu that flashes a smiley face ever so often.

Mondo’s fun flavours

But no matter the vibe or branding, the most crucial aspect of a gelato shop is still its selection — and Mondo’s flavour options are wonderfully creative and eclectic.

On our visit, there were 16 different flavours available, of which six are sorbets.

Amongst these, we count quite a few that contain alcoholic ingredients, such as the lemon sake, marsala wine poached figs and even the ultra unique pineapple makgeolli.

It seems Mondo is one of the few gelato shops in Singapore made for adults!

Mondo charges S$7 for a single scoop, S$10 for a double and S$12 for a triple — that’s just S$5 more for two more scoops!

While it does have some pretty solid classic flavours, such as the earthy Shizuoka matcha, fragrant Sicilian pistachio or robust Piedmont hazelnut, we suggest trying some of their more off-kilter creations.

For example, the blue cheese and candied pear is one of our favourites at Mondo.

Some may balk at the idea of blue cheese, but Mondo does it very elegantly and with balance. You get a light whiff of the blue cheese umami and fragrance, but it’s not pungent at all.

If you’re a strawberry matcha girlie, you can also consider pairing the matcha with Mondo’s fruitier sorbets to achieve that bitter-sweet contrast.

We thought the blood orange and Campari was a good choice, since it not only had that citrus twang, but also sported a drier finish, which accentuated the matcha’s flavours.

While the gelato comes in cups by default, Mondo also makes its own cones (S$1.50) in-house and these are firmer, sweeter, and more like egg biscuits than the usual waffle cones.

Gelato cocktail floats

What truly cements Mondo’s position as a gelato shop for adults are its beverage options.

The menu doesn’t just offer your usual white coffee (S$7) or mocha (S$8), it also boasts four different cocktails (S$18 each) on tap, which are made in partnership with the team from Native, No. 45 on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list.

All the cocktails can be paired with a scoop of gelato to make it a float with a S$4 top-up.

There are no bartender theatrics, since all four cocktails are dispensed out of the same automated tap system used at Beach Road’s 2050 Coffee — but that ensures every drink is consistent!

The one that might draw the most attention is the Cosmo & Wanda, which is a blend of Suntory kakubin whisky, strawberry, matcha and makgeolli.

People would note the lack of green in this matcha cocktail, but that’s because the drink is clarified for a lighter and less creamy texture.

Mondo recommends the pineapple makgeolli for the drink’s gelato pairing, since it helps bolster the fruitiness of the drink.

However, the matcha notes are very subtle and, if you’re a huge matcha aficionado, the team has also said that the concoction works well with a scoop of matcha gelato too!

Our favourites here, though, were undoubtedly the No Filter Needed and Peach Don’t Kill My Vibe.

The former is Mondo’s spin on the espresso martini, combining vodka, coffee liqueur, pomegranate molasses, and coffee.

Mondo recommended having this with banana salted caramel gelato, and it works! The roasty richness and coffee-filled depth of the drink goes harmoniously with the caramel notes and banana sweetness of the melty treat.

Meanwhile, the latter is akin to an Americano or negroni twist, and mixes gin, Campari, red vermouth, peach and almond.

Going with Mondo’s recommendation of the blood orange & Campari gelato gives it a burst of orange vibrancy and makes it even more complex!

But the key thing here is that you can mix and match however you want!

Matcha and strawberry with pistachio ice cream? Go ham. Coffee with blue cheese? Do as you wish.

That’s the charm of Mondo: It’s a playground for adults who love gelato and want to play with creative flavour combinations, and there are few places like it in Singapore.
