Malaysia’s famous Oriental Kopi opens in Singapore with popular egg tarts and bolo bun
Oriental Kopi opens its first outlet in Singapore!
Officially opening to the public tomorrow (Nov 27), Oriental Kopi’s first Singapore outlet can be found on the second floor of Bugis Junction.
If you haven’t heard of the Oriental Kopi name, it’s a popular chain from Malaysia that’s known for its Nanyang-style coffee, bolo buns and signature egg tarts.
The shop opened in 2021, but has since grown into a brand with 20 outlets in Penang, Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, with long queues regularly seen at various outlets.
This opening comes after the brand announced Singapore expansion plans sometime in May, when it also announced plans for eight outlets here over the next three years.
Kopi and egg tarts
Obviously, the first thing you need to try when you visit its Singapore outpost is the signature Oriental kopi (from S$1.80).
Unlike the usual kopi here that uses robusta, Oriental uses a special triple blend of arabica, robusta and liberica, such that the resulting cuppa is aromatic, robust and nicely sweetened.
Next on the list: The egg tarts (from S$5.20 for two pieces) and bolo buns (S$4.60).
The latter sports a soft and crumbly bolo (pineapple) crust and comes with two generous slabs of cold butter that add a rich and creamy texture.
Meanwhile, the former is Oriental Kopi’s most iconic signature and features a velvety egg custard, encrusted within a flaky and airy crust.
It’s rustic, nostalgic and will be enjoyed by anyone who loves old-school confectioneries.
In the same vein is the double butter kaya toast (S$2.60) with a choice of either traditional or pandan kaya.
The toast is thin and crunchy, while the kaya is smooth, fragrant and loaded with coconut fragrance — worth trying for all kaya toast lovers.
Other than toast and bakes, Oriental Kopi’s menu also contains a slew of beloved Malaysian hawker classics.
That includes an assortment of nasi lemak ranging from the Oriental signature nasi lemak (S$9.50) that comes with fried chicken drumstick or thigh, to the saucy rendang beef nasi lemak (S$11.90).
Customers can also find plenty of noodles such as the mee goreng mamak (S$7.50), dry noodle (S$7.90) in traditional panmee style and hearty Penang char kway teow (S$7.50).
For something soupy, don’t forget the Oriental prawn meehoon mee (S$9.50) for an addictive prawn noodle soup that’s brimming with seafood sweetness.
If you want to avoid the crazy crowds that will be heading up north to JB during the holiday season, you can pop by Oriental Kopi’s Bugis Junction spot for a taste of these beloved Malaysian flavours!
This was an invited tasting.
