National Day is just over two weeks away and its festivities have already begun. If there’s anything Singaporeans can agree on, it’s our love for food — and there’s no better way to celebrate than to honour our local culture

Another unifying Singaporean tradition — our love for all things McDonald’s.

This National Day, McDonald’s is introducing two new satay burgers and bringing back an old favourite.

The McDonald’s National Day menu comes highly anticipated with its new hawker-inspired satay burgers and a return of its har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) burger. The former comes with a choice between satay chicken and satay beef. It also pays homage to the Satay Clubs of old, the first of which came about as far back as in the 1940s!

You can also expect to try a brand new drink — Thai milk tea frappe — and pair it with McDonald’s well-loved crisscut fries.

We managed to get a sneak taste of the new flavours before they launch tomorrow. Let’s see how they fare!

The new satay beef burger or satay chicken burger (from S$8.90 for an Extra Value Meal) pays homage to our local hawker favourites. The former sees a juicy beef patty — a slightly thicker version of its Quarter Pounder patty — doused in a nutty, roasted satay sauce. In between the soft buns, you’ll find cubed onions and sliced cucumbers for an added crunch.

Meanwhile, the chicken variant features a tender and moist chargrilled chicken patty instead, but is otherwise identical to its beefy sibling.

For those wise enough to remember, McDonald’s had last introduced a satay burger 10 years ago — the Shiok Shiok Satay. HungryGoWhere understands from the team that the new satay burgers are created from scratch with an entirely new recipe, and were also made to be slightly spicy.

While we loved both variants, we preferred the chicken satay burger for its super soft, tender chicken meat — it made it really easy to chow it down! The beef satay burger had a slight sweetness to it, which complemented the thick, umami-laden sauce well.

The peanut sauce, an essential part of any satay dish, was rich and savoury, without being overpowering. There is a hint of spice as well, although it is not too spicy at all — rather it provides a welcome depth of flavour. (It’s made in mind for all spice tolerances, don’t worry!)

To complete McDonald’s latest National Day menu, get its ice-cold Thai milk tea frappe and crisscut fries. The Thai milk tea flavour had previously been introduced as a soft-serve ice cream. But you can now enjoy it in the form of a thick shake with strong floral notes.

While Thai milk tea is not really a quintessential Singaporean drink, it is definitely a well-loved one among many of us and is sure to cool you down in this heat!

That’s not all for McDonald’s National Day menu — you can also expect a return from its ha cheong gai chicken burger (from S$8.90 for an Extra Value Meal), which will be available from Aug 8. The well-loved har cheong gai chicken burger is oh-so-hearty, with a crispy patty drizzled in a fragrant prawn paste dressing. This is sandwiched by some cucumbers, lettuce and sesame-crusted buns.

Besides that, the coconut soft-serve series is also making a return. You could quell the heat with McDonald’s refreshing coconut cone (from S$1.20), coconut oreo McFlurry (from S$3.60) and coconut hot fudge sundae (from S$2.50).

The McDonald’s National Day menu will run from tomorrow, July 25 for dine-in and takeaway at all restaurants, including Drive-Thrus, McDelivery and various delivery platforms. Do note that the har cheong gai burger will only be available from August 8.

These will only be available for a limited time, so we’d say try them while you can!

This was a hosted tasting.
