Koko Cafe and Patisserie: New Japanese-inspired dessert haven in Tanjong Pagar
There’s a new dessert haven in Tanjong Pagar: Koko Cafe and Patisserie.
Specialising in picturesque Japanese-inspired pastries, the patisserie is the latest F&B concept by the folks behind Gyutan-Tan — Singapore’s first-ever ox tongue and binchotan grill speciality restaurant.
Koko Cafe and Patisserie opened its doors on December 16, and has since garnered quite a bit of online fame for its sumptuous desserts. Think dainty, exquisite cakes crafted in eye-catching colours and pillowy doughnuts piped full of cream.
It’s conveniently located right beside Gyutan-Tan’s Tras Street outlet, too. The team had opted to keep its latest brand close by, in hopes that patrons would head next door for pastries after having a meal at the restaurant.
Koko is actually derived from the Japanese words “here” and “happiness”. It embodies the team’s desire to create a tranquil, homey space where diners could soak in the vibes and share precious moments together.
Pretty pastries galore
Koko Cafe and Patisserie’s menu focuses on prettily dolled-up Japanese-inspired pastries.
Each creation is delicately crafted with quality Japanese ingredients, so that it’s a treat for both the eyes and stomach.
With an array of delectable pastries, ranging from cakes to doughnuts, on Koko Cafe and Patisserie’s menu, you’re spoilt for choice.
The strawberry shortcake (S$10) is a signature here — a fluffy vanilla sponge cake generously layered with whipped cream and juicy strawberries.
It’s light and creamy, and we can see why this is one of the most beloved desserts in Japan. If you’re someone who enjoys classic, fruity flavours, then you’re likely to enjoy this cake.
For a twist on the iconic Mont Blanc dessert, which sees chestnut puree topped with whipped cream, Koko Cafe and Patisserie’s iteration features yam as the star.
The yam Mont Blanc (S$7) is a show-stopping treat — just look at the gorgeously piped swirls of decadent yam paste, atop a flaky meringue base! It’s also fragrant with a slight sweetness to it.
There’s a flavourful surprise concealed within the pastry, too. Slice the yam Mont Blanc in half to reveal an indulgent berry puree and whipped cream filling at the bottom.
The choux puffs at Koko Cafe and Patisserie are not to be missed, either.
They come in three delicious flavours: Original (S$4), matcha (S$5) and chocolate (S$5), and are piped to order. This ensures the choux puffs retain their crisp texture, from the moment they’re prepared, till they arrive at your table.
Note that the availability of each choux puff flavour differs each day, so it’s best to check with the staff when you’re there.
Besides the choux puffs, the doughnuts at Koko Cafe and Patisserie are a crowd-favourite as well.
Meticulously hand-kneaded with pumpkin for a soft, fluffy body, the doughnuts are plump with a slight chew to them. There’s also a balanced ratio of dough to filling, so you get a good mouthful of textures in each bite.
Some popular flavours include coffee (S$5), pistachio (S$5) and chocolate raspberry (S$5). Of these, we loved the chocolate raspberry, which features a sweet-tangy blend of dark chocolate cream and fruity raspberry filling.
Drinks-wise, the matcha latte (S$7.50) and rose matcha (S$8.50) are pretty popular. If you lean towards more floral notes in your drink, the latter is a good bet.
If matcha isn’t quite your speed, there’s the blue pea caramel latte (S$7) — a beautiful, blue-tinged beverage blended with caramel and coffee, or even the kurogoma ice-cream milk float (S$9), crowned with a scoop of black sesame ice cream.
If you have a sweet tooth, Koko Cafe and Patisserie is probably up your alley. With its picture-perfect lineup of handcrafted pastries and brews, what’s not to love about this place?
