When we think of the best zi char in Singapore, most of us would think of dingy old-school outfits that have been around for decades.

But did you know that one of the most popular and well-acclaimed zi char restaurants in recent times is actually relatively young?

First established in 2019 in a quaint coffee shop at Bishan, Yang Ming Seafood is a fledgling compared to many other household zi char names.

Nevertheless, it’s somehow already amassed a legion of fans for itself in the span of four short years, building a reputation for itself as a live-seafood specialist.

Owing to its rising popularity, the restaurant eventually expanded to a second location — this time in the far-flung part of eastern Singapore at Ubi’s Excalibur Centre.

If you’re keen to visit, Yang Ming Seafood’s Ubi outlet is celebrating its second anniversary and the restaurant has rolled out some tantalising outlet exclusives for the occasion.

First, the classics

For anyone who has heard of Yang Ming Seafood, odds are that the first dish they would have heard of is its iconic Andrew Lobster (from S$108 for two pieces of Boston lobster), a dish whimsically named after one of the restaurant’s regulars.

The signature dish comes with a luscious lobster, poached straight from the tank, rested upon silky rolls of chee cheong fun (rice rolls) and drenched in a simple but hearty sauce for maximum indulgence.

There’s also a rather unique signature on Yang Ming Seafood’s menu that might not be for everyone — pig stomach chicken soup (S$78).

Featuring a whole kampong chicken stuffed into a pig stomach and simmered in a herb-laden soup, the dish may sound peculiar but its taste is familiar enough, featuring a homely broth accented by a wholesome herbaceousness.

To celebrate its Ubi outlet’s second anniversary, a few exclusive creations have been added to its menu.

First up is its golden gravy crab with CCF (from S$95/kg for Indonesian live crab) dish, a twist on its beloved lobster chee cheong fun dish.

Similar to its original inspiration, it features a hunk of crab perched atop ribbons of rice rolls. However the difference is that this anniversary special is finished with a golden pumpkin gravy that’s imbued with crab stock umami.

Besides that, Yang Ming Seafood also puts its a charming spin on the zi char staple of chao tah bee hoon (burnt rice vermicelli) using its popular chee cheong fun.

The chao tah pig trotter CCF (S$25) replicates the eggy and charred decadence of the vermicelli dish but the use of chee cheong fun adds a bounciness to it that isn’t quite present in the former.

Those who enjoy pao fan (rice in soup) would probably also enjoy the Ubi-outlet-exclusive umami crab seafood paofan (S$138).

It’s submerged in a bath of rich stock cooked with live crab and prawns then filled with plump prawns and, more importantly, finished with crunchy rice puffs.

While these exclusives were launched to commemorate the Ubi outlet’s second anniversary, these new menu items are here to stay permanently on the menu.

Just in case these sumptuous specials weren’t enough to entice a visit, Yang Ming Seafood’s Ubi outlet also offers free corkage and it’ll even set you up with glasses for any wine you bring along keep that in mind the next time you’re planning a large gathering!
