We visited the IG-worthy new Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar bakery and tried 6 different types of matcha treats
How much do you like matcha?
Some of us enjoy it as a little treat from time to time, while others are so obsessed, it can get too matcha.

No matter which camp you fall into, though, the new Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar is probably worth a visit if you’re the type to relish a vibey cafe experience.
You’d probably have seen it on social media, with so many people fawning over Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar’s exquisite aesthetics.

Much like neighbour and fellow IG darling Champion Bolo Bun, it takes up all three storeys of a Tanjong Pagar shophouse and treats customers to some of the sleekest Japanese-style minimalist decor around.

Besides the chic wooden fixtures and elegant warm lighting, there’s even a little zen garden on the second floor to add to the overall ambience.
Is this too matcha?

There’s no doubt cafe-hoppers and matcha aficionados would have heard of Tsujiri, which is best known for its matcha soft-serve.
However, there’s more than just ice cream at Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar — the bakery-focused concept also features a ton of matcha-forward bakes.
We may not be the biggest matcha fans — we like it enough, though — but we decided to order a whole matcha feast to see what hits and what doesn’t!
Matchamisu polo bun

One of the top-sellers and most unique bakes at Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar is undoubtedly the Matchamisu polo bun (S$6.80).
Bolo bun, butter, and matcha — what can go wrong?
It’s pretty decent, with the butter adding an abundance of richness and fragrance, but the bun itself is admittedly a bit too dry for our liking.

Matcha strawberry cake

One of the most classic combos out there, the matcha strawberry cake (S$11.80) is a dainty sweet treat that really called out to us.
This was pretty nice with the earthiness of the matcha being complemented by the sweet tang of the strawberry.
But for a princely S$11.80, we don’t think this version at Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar does too much to set itself apart from its competitors’ — and we have to dock some points for the price.

Matcha tiramisu

Tiramisu might be one of the most popular classic desserts, but we’ve been seeing a lot more matcha tiramisu (S$9.80) in recent years, and we’re curious to see how this one at Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar fares.
Long story short: Flavour is decent, but overall, it’s too dry.

Matcha premium parfait

With the brand’s roots in soft-serve, one of our first thoughts when we stepped into Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar was to get ourselves some matcha ice cream.
Good silky soft-serve with matcha fragrance, and it’s packed full of toppings, including nama chocolate, shiratama (glutinous rice balls), strawberries, crunchy wafer bits, and panna cotta.
We enjoyed the mix of textures and, in particular, the chewiness of the shiratama!

Matcha oat latte

We’ve all seen the social media trend of “performative males” drinking iced matcha lattes (S$10.80) to appeal to the female gaze — even better when you add in oat milk (S$1 extra) to the mix.
It’s a solid matcha latte with an aromatic dose of earthiness and a heady touch of bitterness but honestly, S$11.80 for a matcha latte is a hard swallow.
Alas, if you’re one of those visiting for the vibes, consider it a premium for Tsujiri Premium Tanjong Pagar’s chic decor!
Sparkling yuzu matcha

On one hand, the sparkling yuzu matcha (S$9.80) is a very refreshing, citrus-forward thirst-quencher.
On the other hand, the matcha flavour turned out to be somewhat muted. It didn’t quite deliver on the matcha part, but we still enjoy it as a lemonade sorta drink — even if it is quite pricey!
