Swensen’s National Day menu is full of addictive, fried cereal goodness
It’s that time of the year again: When we get ready for our nation’s birthday with a sea of red, white and a whole lot of celebrations! National Day is always a great time to pay homage to our local food scene — a mish-mash of cuisines and cultures that is uniquely Singaporean.
Swensen’s Cereal-ously Shiok mains
The highlight for us was the cereal king prawn aglio olio (S$16.90), which came with a bed of springy spaghetti and two large king prawns coated with Swensen’s fried cereal mixture. The prawns were fresh, succulent and a treat for our big appetites.
We appreciated the hint of spice in the dish, which balanced the heavy-handed use of the savoury cereal coating.
If you’re Team Rice, then don’t miss out on the cereal prawn baked rice (S$15.90). Just as umami-laden as (if not more than) the pasta, the dish comes with a slightly sweet, shrimp-based bechamel sauce — a match-made in heaven, if you ask me!
The baked rice was a comforting pot of savoury and sweet flavours, with the addition of ooey-gooey melted cheese and crispy cereal flakes — you’ll love this if you’re looking for a robust, filling dish.
Here’s something unique that you probably haven’t tried before: The cereal chic pizza (S$17.90) features a nine-inch pizza with a combination of different cheeses and cereal-fried tender chicken legs. As someone who’s only ever had cereal-coated seafood, and not chicken, this was a novel and much-enjoyed dish for me.
The chicken went well with the fragrant mixture of cereal, curry leaves and chilli padi. And of course, if you love cheese, there’s so much salty, cheesy goodness here! My only gripe is that the pizza base was a tad thick for my liking, which gave it too much chew.
Swensen’s cereal-infused side dishes and desserts
As for Swensen’s National Day menu side dishes, the cereal mayo fries (S$10.90) were strangely addictive (even for a non-mayo fan like me) and we simply devoured it.
The dish is a staple if you’re looking for something to share: Crispy fries showered with cereal crumbs, creamy mayonnaise, curry leaves, and just a hint of chilli padi.
While the flavours went well together, I felt that the cereal link for this dish was a little tenuous, when compared to the other dishes, which were liberally coated in cereal flakes.
If you love everything and anything to do with cereal, make a beeline for Swensen’s cereal Killer (S$2), a ramekin filled with nothing but wok-fried cereal, curry leaves and chilli padi. It’s pure, unadulterated cereal for showering every dish in it (or eating it with a spoon — who are we to judge?)
To round off the slate of savoury cereal items, its cereal ice cream with mochi waffle (S$10.90) was a decadent treat to end the meal. It sees cereal ice cream nestled atop fresh, chewy mochi waffles and capped off with a Swensen’s signature wafer.
This one is for those who are fans of savoury desserts. Rather than the soft, pillowy mochi I was expecting, however, Swensen’s mochi waffle leans on the thicker and chewier side.
There’s also Swensen’s iconic Nugget ice cream with a cereal twist — it now comes coated with a crunchy cereal crust for Swensen’s National Day menu. As you’d expect, the cereal Nugget ice cream (from S$8.44) is plated to resemble actual nuggets. Bite into it to reveal milky cereal ice cream.
