Muyun cafe is a cosy, ’gram-worthy glamping-themed spot in Tanjong Pagar with desserts and brews
Nestled in the heart of the lively Central Business District is Tanjong Pagar Plaza, a thriving hub home to a trove of food gems.
With an abundance of eats in the ’hood spanning the gamut of coffee roasters, quaint cafes and well-loved hawker stalls, it’s one of our favourite spots to go to.
Our latest find is Muyun cafe, one of the new kids on the block. Plenty of thought and effort has been put into designing its concept, which touts a charming, beachside glamping theme.
Although camping-themed cafes aren’t uncommon (there’s Nomads in Seletar Aerospace Park), Muyun cafe is fashioned with finesse and recreates the scenic experience of dining by a gorgeous beach.
On the inspiration behind Muyun cafe, one of its staff says that the founder wanted to create a pitstop to unwind at after a long day of work, which is why it’s located in a bustling area surrounded by office buildings.
Be it to grab a pick-me-up, or simply just to lounge about and soak in the idyllic vibes, it’s a cosy, spot offering respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The owner, who formerly specialised in renovation works (and prides himself on his keen eye for design), also took care to plan the layout of the place, right down to the nitty-gritty details.
From its rustic, earthy furnishings to the textured, pebbled floors and bamboo parasols, the cafe is decked out in full outdoor glam. It’s also illuminated by the warm, soothing glow of fairy lights, which add a touch of wonder and enchantment to the space.
The menu at Muyun cafe
The menu at Muyun cafe is straightforward with desserts, bakes and coffee. It features light and delicious bites that are easy to munch on, during breakfast or tea-time, and pair well with brews.
The waffle with fruits (S$7) is a soft and fluffy delight adorned with an assortment of fresh fruits and berries, then dusted with sugar for a tinge of sweetness. It also comes with a creamy, tangy yoghurt dip, as well as a homemade honey jam.
The latter is specially sourced from the founder’s bee farm in Yunnan, and boasts a thick and velvety consistency that brims with a rich flavour. It’s not too overly sweet with a light floral undertone.
The low-fat oatmeal bowl with fruits, nuts and chocolate (S$8.90) is a decadent and filling snack loaded with fresh yoghurt and fruits. Mini chocolate bars and crunchy nuts are also added to the mix, which gives the treat an indulgent edge.
Every spoonful that we took was a bite of happiness, as we got to savour a medley of flavours and textures. It’s a refreshing and calorie-lite alternative to an acai bowl, too, since it eschews any butter or sauce.
If you’d like a simple breakfast snack in the morning, the honey butter toast (S$2.90) is a good option that’s not heavy on the palate at all.
Slightly toasted to a slight crisp, the honey butter toast is coated in a sweet and vibrant honey butter that packs a fragrant, drool-worthy aroma. It also features Muyun cafe’s signature yoghurt dip — and a handful of grapes and blueberries — which adds a fruity creaminess to the buttered toast.
There’s a list of brews and Chinese teas on Muyun cafe’s menu, which includes caramel lattes (S$5.80), matcha lattes (S$5.80) and even coconut American coffees (S$5.50). We had the vanilla latte with oat milk (S$6.30) — our pick — that was laced with creamy vanilla notes.
Relish the drinks with the desserts and bakes fresh on the spot, or have them to go. We’d much prefer to savour them in-store, where you can chill and tuck into moreish treats, while basking in the peaceful atmosphere.
