If there’s a brunch food we’ll gladly shell out money for, it’s a perfectly scrambled egg.

There aren’t many dishes that get us all warm and fuzzy inside but a creamy, runny pile of scrambled eggs? Makes our legs weak.

We’re always on the hunt for the best scrambled eggs in Singapore and our search recently brought us to Koki Bakery & Brew Bar, a newly opened cafe at Tanjong Pagar.

Koki is hidden on the second floor of a Duxton Road shophouses and shares the space with Equatorial, a restaurant concept that focuses on Pan-Asian flavours — the former operates during the day, while the latter opens at night.

Both concepts are the brainchild of chef-owner Caleb Ang, best known for his pop-up Mono Izakaya.

Despite sharing the same space, both day and night concepts have very different focuses: Equatorial provides a restaurant-style experience, while Koki’s selection revolves around a slew of bakes, sandwiches, specialty coffee, and tea.

Koki’s sandwiches

So what brought us to Koki?

It’s none other than its tantalising sandwiches, with oozy scrambled eggs sandwiched between two thick and fluffy slabs of toast, which have been making the rounds on Instagram recently.

Koki offers a range of sandwiches on the menu, that are served with a choice of brioche or shokupan (Japanese milk bread), both made in-house.

A crowd favourite so far seems to be the breakfast toast (S$16), a sexy ensemble of shredded breakfast ham, sliced gouda, shredded cheese, and a mound of creamy scrambled eggs.

Our choice of shokupan went very well with the ingredients as its fluffiness was the perfect foil to the velvety mix of cheese and eggs — all in a comforting combo.

For something really interesting, though, we recommend an order of the Mc Riddles (S$18), served with brioche.

As the name suggests, it’s Koki’s take on the popular sweet-savoury sandwich from McDonald’s, and is served with scrambled eggs, sliced gouda, sausage patty, and a drizzle of maple bourbon.

Koki’s McGriddle twist would probably hit all the checkboxes for fans, who will undoubtedly enjoy the juicy and rich patty and the sweet and fragrant maple — oh, and it’s even better with that moreish scrambled egg!

Solid bakes on Koki’s menu

The sandwiches might be what got Koki’s name out there but it’s also got a pretty solid bakes menu for the sweet-toothed cakehoppers.

One that will surely have all the Gen Z’s swooning is the matcha white chocolate strawberry muffin (S$7), which cuts open to reveal a deluge of strawberry jam.

These muffins are a bit gooier in the centre, and the earthy matcha aroma blends nicely into the sweet and tangy strawberry jam.

Other than bakes, Koki also takes its coffee and tea very seriously.

For speciality coffee lovers, the cafe offers a pretty good range of drip coffee  (from S$9) — beans range from cleaner and easier-drinking Ethiopians to more exquisite Geshas.

For a gentler dose of caffeine, there’s also an assortment of pots of curated premium teas, which can be steeped multiple times.

These are not your usual oolongs and green teas, instead Koki offers unique selections such as a 18-year-old aged fermented pu er (S$14 per pot) from Yunnan, and grade 1 rock teas that can cost up to S$35 per pot.

If you want something simpler, the cold hojicha Hokkaido latte (S$12), made with Kyoto Hojicha and Hokkaido milk, would work great as a refreshing and toasty sipper on hot days.

If you like quality teas and coffee, or are as crazy about scrambled eggs as us, we think you can consider swinging by for a chill brunch sesh.
