Market at Maxwell: New matcha pit stop at Maxwell Food Centre with kaya butter waffles
There may be a global shortage of matcha, but that clearly hasn’t stopped the matcha craze is going full steam ahead! We’re continuing to see new spots pop up around our sunny island.
One such contender is Market at Maxwell, which entered the buzzy matcha scene nearly two months ago.
In case you haven’t spotted it, the stall sits next to the fruit drinks stall at Maxwell Food Centre, right across from the entrance of Maxwell MRT.

Beverages here range from S$6.50 to S$7.50 for a cuppa of green goodness. Matcha often comes at a premium price tag, so we’d say this is par for the course, especially since you’re in town!

Market at Maxwell keeps things short and sweet with a focused menu that’s divided into three categories: Matcha, the matcha Cloud series featuring a creamy matcha foam, and your usual espresso-based coffee.
As with any legit matcha spot, Market at Maxwell’s drinks are freshly whisked to order for that signature earthy brew in every cup.
You’ll also find matcha waffles that are filled with an assortment of toppings, such as kaya and butter (S$4), and crunchy peanut butter (S$3.50) — though, sadly, they were unavailable on the day of our visit.

You can’t go wrong with the matcha latte (S$6.50), which is smooth, approachable, and easy on the palate.
Among the many matcha renditions we’ve tried, this one stands out for its well-rounded flavour profile: Not overly grassy, with a balanced touch of umami and bitterness. That said, those who prefer a bolder, thicker brew might find it rather muted.
Still, it’s a good cup that’s likely to appeal to matcha enthusiasts, as well as beginners may be unaccustomed to its sharp flavours.

One of the more popular and ‘gram-worthy picks on the menu is the strawberry matcha Cloud (S$6.50). This eye-catching concoction layers a sweet strawberry puree at the base, matcha latte, then finished with a thick matcha foam on top.
The strawberry is not overly cloying and pairs beautifully with the earthiness of the matcha. Give the drink a thorough stir, and it tastes just like a strawberry shortcake — sweet, creamy, and sure to be a hit with anyone who loves dessert.

Another intriguing pick worth trying is the Down Right Dirty (S$7.50).
Just in case you’re wondering — there’s no espresso involved. Instead, this version brings together a robust hojicha latte made with oat milk, and crowned with a thick matcha cream.
As intense in flavour as it is in appearance, the drink leans heavily into the roasted, smoky notes of hojicha, which will definitely win your heart if you’re a fan of the tea.
However, the matcha does get a little lost in the mix — we found the hojicha too overpowering.
If you’re after something different from your regular kopi and teh options at Maxwell Food Centre, then head to Market at Maxwell for a refreshing, no-frills matcha fix!
