CBD’s new Mexican street taco bar Los Amigos offers well-executed tacos and other hearty bites

If your CBD lunch routine is starting to feel the same, it’s time to shake things up with a dash of Mexican spice at Los Amigos

Launched by the folks behind F&B concepts such as Next Door Spanish Cafe and Asador, Los Amigos is the group’s latest venture and celebrated its official opening just last week.

Unlike its higher-end Spanish siblings, this newcomer is a casual taco bar serving up authentic Mexican street eats, alongside fun fusions you won’t stumble upon anywhere else in Singapore.

Located a stone’s throw from the OG Ya Kun Kaya Toast at Far East Square, Los Amigos’ vibrant murals and colourful outdoor set-up add a much-needed pop of energy to the stretch of otherwise quiet — during the day, at least — storefronts along Nankin Row.

Inside and outside, the ambience here is easy-breezy, yet full of life.

It’s not hard to imagine Los Amigos becoming a buzzy spot for tacos, tipples, plenty of good company, and a taste of that unmistakable Mexican street culture!

Mexican classics and fusion flavours hit the spot!

First, the fritos de coliflor (S$8) caught us off guard — and for all the right reasons.

Los Amigos has cracked the code on frying cauliflower, and does it really well. As someone who dislikes the veggie’s tendency to turn mushy when inexpertly cooked, I was pleasantly surprised.

Each lightly battered floret is a deeply satisfying mix of textures. It stays juicy with the right touch of crunch, and pairs well with the creamy, citrusy coriander chilli crema that wasn’t as spicy as I’d thought.

Before we even knew it, the entire plate had vanished into our tummies.

Next, the bocaditos de pollo (S$12) is another light bite you can’t go wrong with.

True to its looks, the fried chicken is deliciously crunchy with its golden-brown exterior and succulent meat within.

Meanwhile, the housemade spicy sauce is armed with a slow-building punch that, thankfully, doesn’t overpower the palate. It’s also similar to a tangy-and-smoky barbecue sauce, albeit with more heat — a moreish nibble, in any case.

Tacos-wise, this was our first encounter with such out-of-the-box combinations.

First, there’s the tostada de atun (S$14 for two pieces) that brings together a refreshing mix of raw tuna, chipotle mayo, and slightly tangy tomatillo salsa atop crisp taco shells.

Each bite balances the clean-tasting, delicate tuna with the zingy heat of the sauces, creating a flavour combo that’s both bright and satisfying.

If you find yourself bothered by the raw tuna’s slight “irony” flavour, a squeeze of lime does wonders to cut through and brighten the overall dish.

But one that really stood out to us was the ayam masak merah taco (S$15 for two pieces) — easily our favourite of the bunch.

Packed with chicken casserole, spicy tomato sauce, fried shallots, and pico de gallo (a Mexican salsa), this taco is a spice-forward creation that hits all the right notes.

Perhaps it’s my love for Asian flavours speaking, but this one completely won me over. It stays true to the essence of a taco, while cleverly marrying comforting Asian elements with Mexican touches — a genuinely hearty fusion that’s unforgettable.

If you lean towards the classics, the taco de pescado (S$18 for two pieces) is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. This hot favourite features battered barramundi, coriander chilli crema, and grilled pineapple salsa.

Salsa can make or break a taco, and here the grilled pineapple version hits just right — subtly sweet, refreshingly zesty, and adds an uplifting touch to the fish.

Overall, each mouth is chock-full of flavours without ever feeling cloying. It’s truly a treat you won’t want to miss!

And of course, no Mexican meal is complete without a frozen margarita (or two) to wash it all down.

Here, you can sip on a calamansi (S$14) margarita or the flavour of the month (S$15), which happened to be a vibrant raspberry on the day of our visit.

The latter is somewhat reminiscent of a boozy Ribena drink. Be warned, though, the tequila kick in both drinks is delightfully strong!

With delectable tacos at reasonable prices, Los Amigos is a lovely addition to the CBD lunch scene. So if you’re looking to switch things up, this taco bar is sure worth a visit.
