Gelato has become a mainstay in every sweet-toothed Singaporean’s life — in the past decade, we’d seen trendy gelato shops opening in basically every corner and every neighbourhood.

Sure, gelato is popular here, but did you know that gelato is wildly popular in Australia too? And one of its most iconic brands, Gelato Messina, has just opened its first outlet in Singapore.

For those out of the loop: If you’re a gelato lover, a trip to Australia usually necessitates a trip to the likes of Pidappipo and Gelato Messina.

These are legendary institutions, with Gelato Messina itself tracing its history all the way back to Sydney in 2002.

In these two decades, the brand has grown into a world-renowned brand with over 30 outlets worldwide. So it’s only natural that we would be excited to have a taste of its creamy gelato right here on the Little Red Dot.

Besides its reputation, another reason to be excited is its location — Gelato Messina’s first Singapore outlet is found at Club Street, very near Telok Ayer MRT station.

Ice cream-craving CBD-dwellers would know that the Telok Ayer area is basically an ice-cream wasteland and this opening means there’s now a spot to swing by after dinner for some sweet treats!

What to expect at Gelato Messina Singapore

There’s a whole smorgasbord of flavours, made from scratch in-house, on show: 40 in total, to be precise.

And you’re welcome to try them all!

As expected, many of its staple classics can be found here, but Gelato Messina’s Singapore outlet also doles out Singapore-specific flavours.

There will be 30 tried-and-true classics, five local-inspired creations and five rotating flavours, changing everyday — so you’d get something different with every visit to Gelato Messina.

The most interesting ones are undoubtedly the kaya toast, Singapore, How You Durian? and Yolk’s On You flavours, which are clearly locally inspired and will no doubt taste extra nostalgic.

Kaya toast, durian and salted egg? Sounds pretty damn Singaporean, all right.

Prices start from S$7.50 for one scoop, while it goes up to S$10 for two scoops and S$12 for three scoops. Tubs are also available from S$30 for a 0.5l tub.

Our favourite flavours

1. Kaya toast

Can’t get more local than this! One of Gelato Messina’s Singapore exclusives, it features a pandan swirl and is studded with hunks of toast. This indulgent flavour is immensely comforting and comes with a good mix of textures.

2. Panna cotta with fig jam & amaretti

A crowd favourite here — someone described it as “an adult’s gelato”. An elegantly balanced treat, with the fig jam elevating the ensemble with its vibrantly tangy profile.

3. Super dulce de leche

One of Gelato Messina’s ultra classics, which requires a painstaking amount of effort, since the team makes their own dulce de leche (caramelised milk) in house.

There are actually two variations and we recommend the “super” for that super gorgeous, caramelised depth!

4. Yolk’s on You

Perhaps the best way to put it is this: This is the localised version of salted caramel ice cream. This decadent sweet-savoury creation hits hard, especially with the little twinge of local charm.

5. Pistachio or pistachio praline

Pistachio is the most classic flavour and the best way to judge a gelato brand. Photo: Evan Mua/HungryGoWhere

Common wisdom tells us that one of the best barometers to judge a gelato brand is by the quality of its pistachio flavour. Brimming with exquisite pistachio fragrance, Gelato Messina’s pistachio is top notch.

Moreover, you can get the praline version which features crunchy caramelised pistachios for that extra gratifying mouthfeel.

This was an invited tasting.
