Eg Coffee is a new cosy coffee spot in Queenstown with fresh bakes and brews

Nestled underneath Alexis Condominium in Queenstown is the newly opened Eg Coffee, a cosy spot where nearby residents can grab their caffeine fix.
Recently launched on February 1, Eg Coffee is a homely space in a light palette of tawny browns, creams and wooden fittings, and spruced up with knick-knacks.
There’s a mirror with a goofy cat decal plastered on it, pots of greenery here and there, and even candles — odds-and-ends that inject personality into the place. All the elements meld together to exude a casual comfort that’s akin to stepping into a friend’s abode.
There are even camping chairs for diners to lounge on comfortably, too, which is an interesting addition that spices up the look of the cafe.
You can even bring your furry friends along, as its outdoor seating area is pet-friendly!

That’s exactly the kind of concept that couple-owners Esther and Gavin visualised for the cafe. While the place may be small, Eg Coffee is nothing short of cosy and intended to feel like home.

Step into Eg Coffee, and you’re greeted with resounding “hellos” and a mouthwatering display of fresh bakes.
As we had swung by the cafe in the late afternoon, the pantry was still, surprisingly, well-stocked with various sweets and savouries, as well as gelato (S$4.90).
We were spoilt for choice with its drink menu, too. The coffee joint offered a slew of handcrafted beverages spanning coffee, non-caffeinated sips (even matcha!), tea, and soda.
As soon as we placed our orders, Gavin immediately got to work and prepared our drinks, while Esther heated up our bakes. Together, the pair worked in tandem to roll out our orders quickly.

The original rum canele (S$5.50) that’s crafted fresh, from scratch, appears to be a popular item at Eg Coffee. At present, this is its only flavour, though we’re hoping that they’ll gradually add more iterations to the menu.
We did find it to be a delicious tea-time treat that paired well with coffee — the caffeine brings out the bold hints of rum. The beloved French pastry boasts a soft and pillowy centre flavoured with bright notes of rum and a crispy, caramelised shell.

At Eg Coffee, the croissants come in three flavours: The classic butter (S$4), cheese (S$4.50), and Nutella (S$4.50). We’re chocolate lovers, so we gunned for the last of the trio.
While the croissant was flaky and airy — just the way it should be — we’d appreciate it if there was more filling within. There was more pastry than chocolate jam, so it could do with a few more layers of spread for better texture and flavour.

We’d originally had our hearts set on the Nutella and banana bagel (S$6.50) — yes, we know, yet another chocolate-loaded pastry — but it was sold out, so we went with the cream cheese with strawberry bagel (S$6.30) instead.
Most bagels sold at run-of-the-mill bakeries tend to have a dense, sometimes overly chewy texture, but Eg Coffee’s version has a toasted, slightly crispy exterior and a fluffy body underneath. Even the strawberry spread was delicious, too — creamy with just the right amount of sweetness.

If you’d like a bit more punch or variation to your usual coffee, you can try Eg Coffee’s flavoured lattes, which come in interesting flavours (from S$6.90 each) such as osmanthus, mint, vanilla, and dried orange.
Or, if you’re craving refreshing beverages to beat the heat with, get the sodas (S$5.90 each — colourful, refreshing beverages that come in fruity flavours of grapefruit, lemon and strawberry.
