Cornershop is an indie matcha spot in a Marine Terrace hawker centre
Matcha has taken the globe by storm. Almost every cafe-hopper in Singapore that we know of is on the hunt for good matcha lattes, and we bet you probably are, too.
There’s plenty of easy matcha recipes around, but brewing a legit cup of matcha requires skill and patience.
That’s also why most tend to gravitate towards leading speciality matcha brands such as Hvala, Matchaya and Tsujiri, which have already carved their mark — and set the standard for matcha beverages — in the industry.
But as of late, there have been more contenders popping up on our shores — and they serve a mean cup of matcha, too!
One that we’ve discovered recently is Cornershop, a humble hawker stall located in the east at Marine Terrace Market. It refers to itself as an indie drinks stall, and is a one-woman show.
You’re probably wondering: Why a matcha speciality stall in a hawker centre?
When we spoke to the owner, she explained that she simply wanted her own space that wasn’t a cafe, and a hawker stall seemed like the way to go.
It’s not every day that you find a matcha gem in a hawker centre, much less one that specialises in intriguing matcha flavours of all sorts.
There’s the uber-trendy strawberry matcha, maple hojicha, a classic dirty, and the list goes on.
Moreover, there’s also a surprise matcha flavour that graces the menu each week for added variety. (Certain fan-favourite flavours will also make a return!)
Of course, it’s not just matcha on Cornershop’s menu. There’s also kopi and craft beer, for those hankering for a caffeine-fueled pick-me-up, or a midday tipple.
While most of Cornershop’s older customers prefer coffee, there are some adventurous ones who are piqued by the grassy green drink. Some are even trying matcha for the first time!
Highlights on Cornershop’s menu
The matcha drinks here are crafted with ceremonial-grade matcha powder. The owner is also meticulous in preparing each cup, from carefully sifting the matcha powder, to firmly whisking it in a ceramic bowl and adding the hot water at just the right temperature.
Every step and measurement is precise, so that all the beverages are of a consistent quality.
The iced mango matcha latte (S$7), which is made with pure mango puree, was the special of the week when we visited.
It’s layered with a medley of flavours — the earthiness in the matcha, the vibrancy of the fresh mango puree, and the creaminess of the milk all come together well. It’s perfect for beating the heat with.
The other fruity sibling in the series is the iced strawberry matcha latte (S$7), a flavour pairing that matcha lovers can’t seem to get enough of these days.
Honestly, neither can we — it’s a decadent combination that’s sweet and tangy, yet balanced.
For a robust, full-bodied drink, the matcha notes truly pop in the iced dirty matcha (S$6.50).
It’s also infused with coffee that’s roasted with beans from Yong Seng Traditional Coffee (a local, homegrown coffee roaster known for its aromatic blends), so you get a strong caffeine hit with every sip.
Then, the drink is spiced with brown sugar for a tinge of sweetness.
We quite enjoy the iced matcha fizz (S$5), too. Concocted with tonic water and matcha, it’s a bubbly, soda-like refresher that’s best savoured on a hot day — you’ll perk up with just one sip!
If you’d like to try Cornershop’s coffee, the iced maple hojicha latte (S$6) is a piquant delight awash with a smoky, roasted flavour.
Maple syrup is also added to the mix, which spices the drink up with fragrant floral hues. It also offers just enough depth and sweetness to the icy beverage.
All the drinks that we’ve tried at Cornershop haven’t disappointed so far, and we wouldn’t mind stopping by the stall for a matcha or coffee fix if we’re in the area.
We’d also like to see which surprise matcha flavour will hit the menu next!
