On the lookout for a convenient supper spot in town? Well, here’s a blast from the past for all our millennial readers: Do you remember 49 Seats?

49 Seats is quite a nostalgic name for some — it’s been in operation for more than a decade and was formerly located at Orchard Central, where it was a hotspot for dates and hangouts.

Some might not have noticed, but 49 Seats moved out of Orchard Central in 2017 and is now nestled deep in The Centrepoint.

The restaurant is quite spacious and sports a striking industrial-chic decor with metal crockery embedded into the wall and, more importantly, it’s open until 2am.

Conveniently located near Somerset MRT, open til late, and spacious — sounds great for a supper spot, but what about the food?

Tom yum pasta and creative twists

The menu at 49 Seats mainly features cafe and bistro-style dishes spruced up with a creative twist. In fact, many feature familiar Asian flavours, but employed in interesting ways.

For example, its signature dish here is the tom yum pasta (S$17.90) and it’s one 49 Seats has been serving since they opened in 2012, and was apparently one of the first to serve it in Singapore.

This all-time bestseller comes drenched in the restaurant’s iconic tom yum sauce that’s creamy, tangy and moderately spicy all at once — a comforting profile that most will enjoy.

Seafood lovers can also go for the jazzed-up King of Tom Yum pasta (S$19.90) that’s decadently finished with three huge golden-fried king prawns.

For those who have higher spice tolerance, you can also consider requesting for “Level 49 spicy” for your pasta and put your love for spice to the test.

Other than the tom yum pastas, other popular noodle dishes include the smoked duck aglio olio (S$17.90) and creamy smoked duck pasta (S$17.90) for something less robust in flavour.

Of course, pasta isn’t the only thing on 49 Seats’ menu, with the fish & chips being a highly recommended dish, too.

Options include the fish & chips with tom yum sauce (S$19.90) and fish & chips with Alscampi sauce (S$19.90), which comes with a bowl of sauce for dipping, along with some salad and mashed potatoes.

If you’re already ordering the signature pasta to try, consider the Alscampi rendition instead, where the sauce is creamy, zesty and sports a nice kiss of seafood sweetness.

Sides include items such as the salted egg popcorn chicken (S$11.90) and beef bolognese cheese fries (S$11.90) for something more fun — though we did find the former to be too salty.

Oh, and if it’s not quite suppertime, yet, it also offers a pretty solid lunch happy hour (11:30am to 5pm) where you can get a main, a soup and a drink for S$17.90!

Remember this for the next time you’re in the area and looking for an affordable lunch option or a late-night option!

This was an invited tasting.
