Sake+: Affordable Japanese food and sake at aesthetic new spot in 313 Somerset
If you’re a Japanese food lover in the Orchard area, it’s not an amazingly diverse area for affordable Japanese food options (besides the hidden gems at Cuppage Plaza, of course).
Sure, you have your popular conveyor belt sushi chains but sometimes you just want something a bit fancier — but without burning a hole in your wallet.
Located in the open-air section of 313 Somerset, Sake+ is a spacious two-storey space and, compared to Sakuraya’s other stores, is a much more photogenic and swanky affair.
The first storey features an al fresco dining area and a fleet of fridges loaded up with specially curated sake, whereas the second storey is a more intimate dining room that features a crystal chandelier as the centrepiece.
Japanese with Italian soul
The food at Sake+ is best described as a marriage of Japanese and Italian cuisines. The menu features an assortment of Japanese staples, such as soba and sashimi, but also pizzas and pasta as well.
If you’re feeling extra hungry, Sake+ also has a special omakase promotion that’s available from 12pm to 10pm daily. It starts from S$48 per diner, requiring a minimum order of two portions or more.
It’s not exactly an authentic “omakase” per se but two pre-curated seven-course set menus: Salmon palette (S$48) if you’re craving sashimi and A5 wagyu wonderland (S$66) for beef lovers.
The former is great for sashimi cravings. It comes with an assorted sashimi plate that has all the favourites, such as salmon and scallops, but also comes with carbs such as sweet potato and Yamagata dashi soba to fill you up.
There’s also grilled eel in the set!
The latter option is more protein-heavy. There’s the parma ham with Japanese shine muscat and an assorted carpaccio plate to supplement the highlight — a Miyazaki A5 wagyu steak.
Those particularly fond of Western food will also enjoy the inclusion of truffle potato wedges and shrimp tomato pasta to round up the ensemble.
But if you’re more picky and want to choose your own food, Sake+ also has a bunch of popular items on its a la carte menu.
Grilled food lovers would want to go for items such as the shio koji pork steak (S$16), while those partial to Italian food can get the margherita pizza (S$14).
Anyone who wants to try making their own sushi should also try out the temaki sushi set (S$48), which provides fish, seaweed and rice for you to DIY your own rolls!
Of course, as the name suggests, there will be a plethora of sake available to accompany your meal — check with the Sake+ staff and they will suggest some good pairings!
The next time you’re looking for a casual Japanese meal at Orchard, this could be it.
