Paradise Pizza: New artisanal sourdough pizza joint at Holland Grove inspired by fusion flavours
Good pizzas are hard to achieve, especially since crafting the perfect dough can be a laborious task. Despite that, there have been a couple of notable establishments with fantastic pizzas that have popped up in Singapore in recent times, such as the wildly popular La Bottega and artisanal pizzeria Gusta Sourdough Pizza Co.
The latest to the fray is Paradise Pizza, a newly launched sourdough pizza joint at Holland Grove. It’s an offshoot brand of beloved brunch cafe Elixir Coffee and Wine, which also shares the same space.
Opened in July 2019, Elixir served up a melange of mains and beverages, however, it was its pizzas that were the star of the show there.
Eventually, the pizzas garnered so much love and popularity that the brand decided to focus solely on sourdough pizzas, hence the debut of its new sister brand, Paradise Pizza, in July this year.
With both brands still located in its Holland Grove outlet, patrons get the best of both worlds: Sourdough pizzas from Paradise Pizza and brews from Elixir Coffee and Wine — all under one roof.
If you’re a pizza lover, you’ll know that the hallmark of an exceptional sourdough pizza is its airy crust — crisp on the edges, dotted with its signature leopard spots and heaped with a medley of toppings — and soft, chewy body.
Paradise Pizza’s sourdough creations serve up just that: Its pizzas undergo a long 48-hour fermentation process, resulting in an enriched, fluffy dough with a flavourful depth and a sexy, slightly charred crust.
Paradise Pizza’s menu: Pizzas inspired by comfort fusion flavours
The team at Paradise Pizza at Holland is deliberate in its choice of pizza flavours, putting forth a menu heavily inspired by comfort fusion flavours from all around the world, so that diners can have a litany of familiar profiles to choose from, no matter their craving.
For starters, there’s the vibrant Jap-A-Dog pizza (S$26), inspired by the cult-favourite hot dog chain, Japadog, in Canada. Japadog is known for its Japanese-inspired hot dogs that are a unique riff on the classic Japanese snack okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake heaped with a variety of toppings).
Drawing influence from Japadog, Paradise Pizza created its very own Jap-A-Dog, featuring succulent bits of arabiki sausage, bonito flakes and furikake on a creamy, cheesy bed of pizza dough. The pizza is then drizzled with rich kewpie mayo and okonomiyaki sauce — the two must-have ingredients — giving it a sweet and mildly tangy finish.
The decadent hot assam pizza (S$22) is Paradise Pizza’s take on the traditional assam laksa dish, a specialty from Penang.
Here, the hearty, spicy-sour flavours you’d usually find in an assam laksa are replicated onto a crispy sourdough pizza — the base of the pizza comes coated in a zesty, slightly spicy assam paste that has a subtle tang of sweetness. The pizza is then embellished with slices of sausage, mint leaves, onion, lime, and specks of chilli flakes.
All the flavours work in tandem, and we gobbled it all up in no time — it’s clear that this is our favourite pizza between the two we tried.
The staff at Paradise Pizza recommended we also try the signature deep-fried burrata (S$24), which is meant to be a sharing plate.
As someone who wasn’t a fan of stronger cheese-based dishes, I was a tad hesitant to give it a go, however, I ended up finding the dish surprisingly palatable — even for non-cheese lovers like myself.
The silky-smooth burrata cheese came encased in a light and airy shell, and had just the right amount of crisp — both combined made for an extremely addictive pairing.
The deep-fried burrata is also accompanied by a moat of pomodoro sauce, lending it a refreshing tinge of acidity which contrasted well with the heavier notes in the dish.
With its original background in coffee, Elixir Coffee and Wine takes its coffee drinks very seriously, so you won’t go wrong with a cuppa from its list of caffeinated beverages.
There are the usuals: Latte (S$6), cappuccino (S$6), mocha (S$7) and more — they might be standard pickings, but hey, they’re good enough to pick you up for the day.
Or if you’re up for a midday cocktail, Elixir Coffee and Wine also has a fine selection of cocktails, wines and beer on tap.
Final thoughts
If you’re craving sourdough pizzas notched up with a fusion twist, then you’ll probably enjoy the creations on Paradise Pizza’s menu.
However, we do find its location to be slightly inaccessible — the nearest MRT station (Dover) is a 16-minute walk away — especially if you’re travelling by public transport.
But if you’d like to try sourdough pizzas elevated with familiar flavours, it’s well worth the journey, maybe with a cab ride in!
