It’s common for restaurants and cafes to have punny names, but here’s one that you may not have heard of — Nakey (a cheeky wordplay on “naked”).

Before you let your imagination run wild, Nakey is an all-day cafe with brunch staples, bomboloni (Italian-inspired stuffed donuts), organic wines, and coffee. (Despite the name, everybody is fully clothed!)

Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, it’s also started by the same folks behind Sawasdee Thai Restaurant that sits just next door. Just in case you’re wondering — no, Nakey’s menu does not incorporate any Thai-inspired elements.

HungryGoWhere understands that the team wanted to provide a relaxing oasis with delicious brunch fare away from the buzz of Chinatown, a tourist hotspot that’s always hopping with activity.

At the entrance, you’ll spot a unique-looking concrete divider that separates its outdoor and indoor seating areas.

While its al fresco space, surrounded by lush greenery, is a chill spot to lay back, most diners — including us! — would probably ask to be seated indoors. After all, not many can bear Singapore’s relentless humidity.

But when you step into Nakey, its interior radiates a cosy and homely ambience. Decked in warm, woody tones and concrete greys, the cafe proves to be a casual spot for passing the time and digging into yummy mains.

Trying out Nakey Cafe’s menu

I was looking for something hearty, yet healthy, so I went with the staff’s recommendation — the avo kale toast (S$17). This came with a generous mound of crispy kale, guacamole, scrambled eggs, and cheese.

Nakey’s sourdough was pretty well-executed with its delightfully chewy texture, crunchy crust, and tangy undertones that weren’t too overpowering.

Unlike most avocado toasts on the market, Nakey’s rendition sports crispy kale — an unexpectedly addictive addition, thanks to its distinct, umami notes that tasted almost like deep-fried seaweed.

Each mouth was chock-full of flavour and I was, in fact, relishing the entire dish!

My dining companion got the bagel breakfast sandwich (S$16). It came filled with hashbrown, scrambled eggs, smoked cheddar and green curry mayo sandwiched between two soft bagel slices.

If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast fix, this is a tried-and-true combination of flavours that you can’t go wrong with — simply classic.

Nakey’s bagels were slightly toasted, with a crisp exterior and gently chewy texture, which may not be your thing if you have a penchant for soft bagels.

As for dessert, there’s no way we’re missing out on the bomboloni

When we swung by on a weekday after lunch hours, the classic custard Bastard (S$5.50) was the only flavour left.

There are usually four variations available daily, comprising permanent and seasonal flavours — so, be sure to head down early if you’re hoping to try a fuller selection!

Nakey’s portions are as plentiful here as with its other offerings — the fluffy donut was filled to the brim with a creamy vanilla bean-infused filling that we thoroughly enjoyed.

The custard avoided being too too rich and cloying, while the sugar coating on its exterior added a mild sweetness to it.

We also got our caffeine fix with Nakey’s speciality coffee concoctions — iced matcha pistachio latte (S$8) and iced caramel Biscoff latte (S$8).

Unfortunately, the drinks didn’t quite hit the mark for us — the flavours in these two drinks felt muted, especially in comparison to the strong, overpowering notes of espresso.

There are other thirst-quenching options, such as teas, fresh juices, and smoothies, which we might go for instead next time!
