Award-winning Japanese brand Maji Curry opens at Funan with decadent curry rice

Talk to any Singaporean about Japanese cuisine and you’d hear them raving about chirashi don, sushi and ramen first.
Curry rice is usually not one of the dishes you’d think of, just off the top of your head.
Sure, many of us love indulging in the thick and sweet curry, but it’s not something that we crave for all the time.

But it’s different when we’re talking about one of the best Japanese curry rice in Singapore — you know what we mean, if you’ve been to Maji Curry.
This award-winning Japanese curry rice brand is a cult-favourite amongst many local Japanese food lovers and you can sometimes see queues forming outside its small Novena outlet during dinner-time.
But here’s some good news for Maji Curry fans who live further away: It’s opened a new outlet at the much more central Funan!
While there’s nothing too outlandish or special about the interior design, the outlet features a striking “nebuta” — handmade, life-sized lantern floats of warrior figures traditionally paraded in summer festivals in the Aomori prefecture — custom-made by a seventh-generation master from Japan. Pretty cool.
Decadent curry rice

If you’re wondering what the hype is about, Maji Curry is a two-time winner of the prestigious Tokyo Kanda Curry Grand Prix, clinching the top prize in 2018 and 2022.
The curry is specially made from chicken bouillon and boasts a robust medley of spice nuances and fragrance — there’s also a gentle dose of heat (at level one) to keep things lively.
It’s thick, decadent and probably one of our favourite renditions of Japanese curry in Singapore, with a good mix of spice, sweetness and more depth than the usual sweeter Japanese curry most are familiar with.

The curry is undoubtedly the star, but Maji Curry has plenty of supporting characters to go with it and you’re presented with a slew of accompaniments, ranging from eggplant (S$11.50) to tonkatsu (S$12.50).
Big eaters can also go for the triple meat (pork cutlet, beef hamburger steak, beef shabu, S$20.50), which could also be enough to feed up two small eaters.
Of all the protein options we tried, we thought the hamburger steak was the best — it was rich, chunky, juicy, and paired well with the curry’s spice notes.

To make things more interesting, Maji Curry also gives you the chance to jazz up your curry rice with its cheese sauce (extra S$1.80) and omelette (extra S$2).
We thought Maji Curry’s cheese sauce added a good creamy touch, but the cheese flavour was on the milder side. The omelette was pleasantly silky and makes for good omurice (Japanese omelette rice), though!
If you’re ever in the area looking for a fuss-free and satisfying meal, we think the robust, spice-rich and silky curry is more than enough reason to head down to Funan for some of Maji Curry’s offerings.
This was an invited tasting.
