Chinese tea might not be as trendy and popular as coffee or matcha, but we’ve noticed a growing number of tea enthusiasts in Singapore of late.

But where do people go for tea? While there are plenty of rustic teahouses in the Chinatown area, we found a new spot that’s quite different: The minimalist and modern Golden Seed at Millenia Walk.

The chic teahouse is located on the ground floor of the shopping centre and looks more like an art gallery or upscale hair salon, on first sight.

Golden Seed was opened with the vision of providing a stylish space for tea lovers to appreciate their brews and the space is done up with plenty of dainty foliage and artwork — it looks like a photo out of Pinterest or Xiao Hong Shu.

According to the staff, Golden Seed’s teas are specially curated from places all over China, with the exception of a Li Shan tea from Taiwan, to provide the best quality for tea connoisseurs.

Customers should first choose between the tea journey awakening (S$38 per diner) or grand tea experience (S$88, can be shared with up to four, at an additional S$48 per diner) sets.

The former gives you a choice of only long jing or da hong pao teas, whereas the latter lets you choose from a larger premium range that includes Yun Nan pu er and Fu Ding white tea.

Each set also comes with some snacks for you to munch on, while you slowly sip on your chosen tea.

The price might be a bit steep, but Golden Seed allows you to steep your tea multiple times, so you can spend some time there relishing it throughout the course of an afternoon.

For example, the long jing can be steeped twice, while the da hong pao can be steeped up to five times.

Of the two, we thought the long jing would be great for those who enjoy mellow tea. It’s crisp and rounded with a good dose of grassy sweetness, with a subtle nutty undertone.

The da hong pao was much more robust and intensifies in flavour with each subsequent steep. It first starts off with a gentle roasted earthiness and a faint milky aroma, before the roast fragrance takes over as it intensifies.

There are undoubtedly more affordable teahouses to choose from in Singapore, but if you are someone who loves tea or wants to find a nice place you can work at, Golden Seed might be worth checking out.
