New Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre opens in Sengkang with scrambled egg rice, thunder tea rice and more
If you stay along the purple line, you’ve probably found yourself bemoaning the lack of quality hawker centres quite frequently.
While the north-east undoubtedly has a good selection of hawker eats, the food situation is not quite as robust in the more established areas of Singapore.
Fortunately for those staying in Sengkang, the ‘hood has gotten a boost in hawker food diversity with the recent launch of the new Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre.
Situated on the second storey of the Anchorvale Village mixed development, the new hawker centre is managed by Kopitiam and features quite a wide array of hawker stalls.
There will be a total of 36 different stalls operating out of Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre and it can accommodate up to 650 diners, so there are plenty of options and loads of space for everyone.
Other than the staggering food options, the space also offers eye-candy, in the form of a wall mural — 20m wide and 5m tall — that adds a splash of vibrance to the hawker centre.
Mix of classic and unique
For those who enjoy being able to pick and choose from a wealth of options, Anchorvale offers up a good mix of classic dishes and interesting new concepts.
Old-school brands include Hokkien mee stalwart Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee, which has been around since the 1960s, and Eng Kee Chicken Wing, a popular fried chicken-wing brand from Commonwealth, whose bee hoon with two wings and egg (S$5.30) is sure to hit the spot.
If Eng Kee’s chicken wings aren’t enough, there’s also Soldier Chicken, which dishes out a satisfyingly crispy three-piece Soldier chicken combo (S$7.90) in classic local Western style.
The newer, but well-known, Cuo Cuo You Yu can also be found at Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre, with its signature dry bak chor mee (S$6) and rich, murky soup? It’s a reliable option that should satisfy your bak chor mee cravings.
For something different though, one of the more intriguing businesses at Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre is Kawan Bowl, a concept serving scrambled egg rice bowls akin to the popular Danlao, but with Muslim-friendly toppings instead.
That means creations such as the ayam berempah egg rice (S$6.90) with crispy, well-spiced chunks of ayam berempah to go with silky scrambled eggs — a hell of a combo.
Another one is Hakka Leipopo which, as it name suggests, specialises in the not-oft-seen Hakka thunder tea rice, as well as yong tau foo.
For the best of both worlds, we recommend the Set A (lei cha and three pieces of yong tau foo, S$8.30) to get some generously stuffed yong tau foo to go with the hearty and earthy thunder tea rice.
All in all, the selection at Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre is pretty good with plenty of diversity — anyone staying in the ‘hood, or maybe finding themselves looking for dinner options in the area, should consider popping by.
