FOC By The Beach at Sentosa: Celebrating 10 years with a bold new look & menu
For the uninitiated, looking at FOC’s name might make you think of the phrase “free of charge”.
While the experience at FOC By The Beach is anything but free, it’s actually pretty “fire”, both in the Gen Z lingo sense, in what the term “foc” literally means in the Catalan language. (Catalan is a language spoken in Barcelona and several Spanish regions.)
Helmed by FOC Group’s Spanish chef-partner Nandu Jubany, FOC By The Beach at Sentosa is the group’s way of bringing a slice of the beachfront dining culture of the Catalan coasts to Singapore.
FOC By The Beach (or FOC Sentosa, as it was formerly known) opened in 2016, shortly after the group first opened FOC Restaurant at Clarke Quay in 2014.
It underwent a major revamp (its first since it opened close to a decade ago) and officially reopened in April this year.
For this beachfront concept, Chef Nandu drew inspiration from his favourite bar in La Barceloneta, and aims to serve up a modern Mediterranean menu alongside a fun beachside dining experience.
Everything at FOC By The Beach has been meticulously designed, from its aquamarine accents to its placements of traditional fishing traps — every element is the group’s deliberate way of whisking you away to the Catalan coast.
The space at FOC By The Beach is expansive — for indoor seating options, there’s its indoor bar and pool lounge, and for those who prefer the sunny outdoors, you can opt for its picnic tables, bean bags, day beds and beach cabanas
Longtime fans of FOC will also be glad to know that the team has kept its well-loved spacious lap pool — so you can opt for a dip anytime during your meal.
FOC By The Beach takes reservations for its indoor dining hall, outdoor terrace seats, beach cabanas and picnic tables on its website; though those with furkids can only bask at the beach cabanas and picnic tables.
Following its revamp and in celebration of its 10th anniversary, FOC By The Beach at Sentosa is also serving up a refreshed menu, with close to half the menu being new items. If you haven’t visited in a while, there isn’t a better time to, really!
Trying out FOC By The Beach’s new menu
What’s a beach day without good food?
Thankfully for those of us who are looking for more than just nibbles and bites by the beach, FOC By The Beach has a full-fledged menu with tapas, paellas, and Mediterranean seafood dishes.
Fans of FOC By The Beach’s previous menu offerings will be heartened to know that despite the menu refresh, the crowd-favourite iberico ham croquetas (S$15) and its huge paella plates, which are great for sharing, remain available, though its flavours have been switched up.
Though it’s our first time having the croquetas, we can see why it’s remained a favourite after all this time. The deep-fried rolls are lightly crisp on the outside and decadently creamy within. It’s also doesn’t taste too cloying, despite all its elements, making it the perfect beachside snack to have your tropical cocktails with.
There’s six different types of paellas, but its bestsellers are the octopus and squid ink paella (from S$54 for a small portion which feeds two to three people), and the cod kokotxas and prawn meloso rice (from S$54 for a small portion) — which is known as creamy rice in Spanish.
If you only have space for one, the octopus and squid ink paella was a tad more memorable for us, thanks to the umami flavours from the seafood and paprika aioli (mayonnaise dipping sauce) combined. There was also a mild smokiness to the squid ink paella that we particularly enjoyed.
With this new menu refresh, FOC by the Beach is also introducing more seafood-focused dishes, such as Argentinean prawns al ajillo (Spanish garlic shrimp, S$32) and Japanese hamachi tiradito (cured yellowtail fish, S$24).
For something more substantial, you’ll want to try its FOC parrillada (S$68), an assorted meat platter with French yellow chicken, chorizo sausage, beef tenderloin, Spanish sausage and lamb ribs — the substantial platter feeds about three to four people and is every meat lover’s dream.
We couldn’t get enough of the beef tenderloin, which came served nicely pink in the centre and browned on the outside, and was thankfully oh-so-succulent.
Though I’m not a fan of lamb usually, I have to admit I was impressed by its tender texture and robust flavour — those who sit on the fench like me will want to give it a go, too.
If you can’t decide which sauce to pair your meats with, the chimichurri sauce is always a good one that’s versatile across all proteins.
If you’re feeling thirsty after all that fun in the sun, FOC By The Beach serves up a comprehensive menu of beverages.
You can opt for cocktails such as its FOC white sangria (from S$18 for a glass), milkshakes (from S$11) or even alcoholic shooters (S$10) if you want to get the party started.
If you prefer sweeter cocktails, FOC white sangria will be right up your alley. FOC’s version is a mixture of white wine, rum, peach liquor, and fruits — it’s refreshing, sweet and just extremely easy to drink.
Prefer something less saccharine, but still want something refreshing? FOC Barcelona’s spritz work just as well — it’s a classic Aperol spritz that you can’t go wrong with.
All in all, FOC By The Beach is definitely serving immaculate laidback vibes with its aquamarine blue-themed space, as well as its extensive menu of Mediterranean tapas and refreshing cocktails, perfect for beach day with Singapore’s hot weather.
If you’re looking for a unique beachfront spot for birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions with your loved ones, maybe it’s time for you to drop by the refreshed FOC By The Beach at Sentosa this weekend!
