If you find yourself leaving or arriving in Singapore at Changi Airport soon, there’s a new kid on the block to check out: Claypot Daddy, where you can load up on oh-so-comforting local claypot dishes

Helmed by Shawn Lim, 45, restaurateur and executive director of Penang Culture, Claypot Daddy is a newly launched concept with a focus on claypot dishes and sizzling hotplates.

If you’re curious about the name, Shawn’s newest venture is inspired by his young daughter, who prefers non-spicy food and has a penchant for claypot-cooked dishes.

Here, the menu has a tantalising lineup of over 30 claypot and hotplate dishes that are both family-friendly and affordable, making it an ideal spot for cosy, communal meals in big groups.

Claypot Daddy opened officially on January 13 and sits right above the Departure area at Terminal 2 — just next door to Taiwan Culture, its sister concept.

We understand the restaurant is in the process of becoming halal-certified, but its dishes are currently pork- and lard-free.

Hearty claypot dishes

Claypot Daddy has quite the variety available, so if you’re unsure of where to start — just like us — you can’t go wrong with its gongbao chicken (S$8.90).

A classic stir-fried dish with cubes of chicken, chillies and cashews, this portion is good for sharing between two to three diners. Each piece of chicken is nicely coated with a sticky black sauce and not overly spicy.

There’s also a choice of prawn or fish, if you prefer it.

Another dish that left quite an impression on us is its Daddy’s fish fillet curry (S$14.90), featuring a slab of seabass in a thick curry gravy.

This dish, too, is good for sharing between two to three diners. It arrived piping hot at our table, with the familiar, comforting fragrance of curry spice wafting through the air.

We appreciated the subtle hints of tanginess that reminded us a little of assam curry — it isn’t overpowering, with a good balance between its spicy-sour notes. The fish is succulent and tender, too.

Be sure to get a bowl or two of fragrant steam rice (from S$1.50) or claypot signature white porridge (S$3) to enjoy all that precious zhup (gravy) with.

If you’re looking for non-spicy options, Claypot Daddy has a handful of dishes up its sleeve, too.

We tried the Daddy’s hotplate char siew (S$9.90) — chicken char siew that arrived on a sizzling plate, with a caramelised red sauce poured tableside. It was a hearty savoury-sweet dish that we enjoyed with our carbs — we can see this being a hot favourite among the kids!

Other menu highlights include the silky steamed egg (S$6.90), Daddy’s Signature Treasures (S$18.90) with premium ingredients such as prawns, scallops, fish maw, and claypot dragon chives (S$8.90), which we found incredibly rich in wok hei.

As always, no meal is complete without a helping or two of dessert. For those with a sweet-tooth, there’s a black glutinous rice with ice cream (S$5.90), while the elders in your group will likely go for the hot cheng tng (S$5.90).

Claypot Daddy’s opening promotion

To commemorate its official opening, diners accompanied by their children — a grandparent-parent pair counts, too — can enjoy 50% off selected dishes (at a cap of five dishes) from January 13 to 19.

These dishes include the gongbao chicken claypot (U.P. S$8.90), herbal chicken soup (U.P. S$10.90), hotplate chicken egg tofu (U.P. S$8.90), silky steamed egg (U.P. S$6.90), and Daddy’s favourite curry chicken (U.P. S$8.90).

This was an invited tasting.
