If you work around One-North or in the CBD, you know how pricey lunch can get, with many cafes and eateries charging upwards of S$10 per dish.

The good news is, Bread Yard has rolled out an affordable weekday lunch menu. From satisfying S$8 pastas to flavour-packed sides, this menu lets you enjoy a hearty, delicious lunch.

And at S$8, it feels like a rare find in the One-North area — a price point that’s tough to beat for this level of quality.

But while tasty, the pastas are just that. So if you’re looking for something beyond just carbs, you’ll need to add a dish or two to round out the meal.

A beloved bakery-cafe in the area

Bread Yard has been a well-known name on the cafe scene for quite some time now.

It began as a cosy nook at the former Singapore University of Technology and Design — not far away from its current digs — before relocating to Galaxis 9 years ago.

Since then, it has become a go-to spot for quiet, yet hearty and delicious business lunches and brunches.

Recently, Bread Yard has expanded its menu to better serve the needs of its clientele of office-goers and brunch lovers.

Besides extending opening hours for dinner on Thursdays and Fridays, the eatery has also launched an S$8 pasta menu for lunch that’s recently gained popularity on social media.

A wallet-friendly lunch menu

We visited on a Monday afternoon around 2pm, just after the peak lunch hour. Even then, the cafe was quite full, with most tables opting for the famed pastas.

There are six pastas on the menu: Aglio olio, spaghetti tomato basil, mafaldine pesto, fettuccine miso cream, mentaiko pasta, and white wine garlic pasta.

We sampled two to see if they lived up to the hype: The fettuccine miso cream and the mafaldine pesto. Of the two, we’d pick the former. Cooked to a perfect al dente, the fettuccine was firm to the bite without being too tough, while its accompanying miso sauce was rich, yet light enough to avoid being too jelak (overly rich).

Basil lovers will fall for the mafaldine pesto. The sauce tasted earthy and bright, with ground grana padano cheese adding a flavourful depth, and clung to each ribbon of pasta beautifully.

We know sometimes less is more and Bread Yard really showcases that here. According to its manager, all the pasta dishes are based on simple recipes and use pasta from an artisan supplier.

Note that these pastas are available Monday through Friday, from 10am to 5.30pm.

If you’re with your lunch squad, there are also dishes for sharing. Our favourite is the spicy buttermilk wings (S$12) served with hot mayonnaise sauce. The golden coating of the wings seals in all the juicy flavour, while the tangy kick adds a heat that builds with every bite.

Dinner delights for a treat

Beyond lunch, Bread Yard has also introduced a dinner menu — available on Thursday and Friday evenings only — featuring a slew of new and flavourful dishes.

The white wine clams (S$24), served with house khobz bread, are undoubtedly a star. The aroma of garlic and white wine wafts through the air as soon as the dish arrives at our table, accompanied  with soft, airy bread ideal for soaking up every drop of the savoury sauce.

For mains, dishes such as the grilled octopus (S$28) and Argentine striploin (S$32) are all protein-packed and generous in size — perfect for a satisfying dinner to wrap up a long work week.

This was a hosted tasting.
