1030 Breakfast Shop: New hawker stall with Taiwanese breakfast-style creature comforts from S$2

Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre is a bona fide foodie haven.
It’s a paradise brimming with an eclectic array of cuisines and local eats, housing time-honoured vendors and Michelin-rated stalls.
The hawker centre, steeped in age-old tradition and history, seems to be a prime location among those aspiring to launch their own F&B business.
We’ve noticed more young, eager-eyed hawkers joining the fray of entrants here and dishing out modern, hipper eats — the new 1030 Breakfast Shop included.

You’ll find 1030 Breakfast Shop tucked away in the Blue Zone, which is a quieter section located at the back of the hawker centre.
Its light pastel yellow signs and adorable omelette motif are hard to miss.
You’ll also spot a pair of sisters cooking a storm in a kitchen, churning out freshly rolled dan bing (Taiwanese egg pancakes) and loaded toasts.

While its neighbouring vendors specialise mainly in Chinese and Cantonese fare, 1030 Breakfast Shop offers variety and accessibility with its Taiwanese breakfast-style dishes, priced from S$2.
The chef and founder, Eeling, tells us that she started 1030 Breakfast Shop so that she could recreate the authentic Taiwanese fare that she so dearly enjoyed while there.
Eeling is aided by her sister, who runs the business with her, though she handles the preparation work.

Eeling recommends the signature toast (S$6.50), an uber-stacked delight stuffed with a whole bunch of delectable ingredients.
You can savour it for brunch, as it’s hefty with slices of pork chop, egg, luncheon meat, cheese, and velvety peanut butter jam.
The peanut butter jam meshes surprisingly well with the proteins. It has a creamy, roasted indulgence to it, which complements the savouriness of the meats sandwiched between.

If you’re all about anything black sesame-related, then the black sesame toast (S$2) is up your alley.
It’s a no-frills breakfast essential, featuring two fluffy slices that are gently toasted to a light brown, and fragrant black sesame jam slathered generously in between.

Dan bing takes centrestage on 1030 Breakfast Shop’s menu.
Made with egg batter, the pancake is carefully and thinly folded — until it resembles a crepe — then stuffed to the brim with a mouthwatering combination of ingredients.
The best versions of this crepe-slash-omelette have a crispy exterior and slightly chewy body, while its ingredients are plump and robust with flavour.
Eeling achieves just that in the ham cheese egg omelette (S$5), which has fresh slices of ham and cheese in the middle — a winning combination.

The hashbrown bacon egg omelette is our pick of the lot. There’s something about the crunch of the fried bacon bits and hashbrown that makes it oh-so-addictive.
It’s not too oily, either, and the subtle eggy flavour in the omelette balances out any richness in the dish.

For a carb-loaded dish, order the minced pork millet (S$2), sprinkled with bits of mushrooms, scallions and carrots, or the luscious braised pork rice (S$2).
Both are served in a small bowl, so they can be savoured as a light accompaniment to the other heavier, heartier dishes on the menu.
(Which is great, because we were almost out of tummy space by the time we were through with all the toasts and omelettes!)

They can be purchased a la carte, or added on to any egg omelette or toast value set meal for S$1.
