If Mexican food is your thing: Hola, you’ve come to just the right place! Mexican food in Singapore has not only found its place in Singapore’s international food scene, but has also won a sweet spot in the hearts of many with its diverse and bold flavours.

Our favourite thing about Mexican food is how it incorporates elements of nature’s finest produce to come up with spectacular flavours, with the simplest of ingredients, too — such as corn, beans, avocados, chillies, and tomatoes. You can also always be certain that there’ll be vegetarian and vegan options.

For the best tortillas, burritos, quesadillas, and salsas, in town, check out these 20 places for fiery good Mexican food in Singapore that will certainly spice up your tastebuds:

1. Huevos

New Bahru, 01-16, 46 Kim Yam Road

Why visit? Huevos has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a delivery concept that went viral over the pandemic — it now has two quaint outlets serving authentic and pretty out-of-this-world Mexican food. At Huevos, you’ll get the best bang for your buck, with an excellent price to quality and quantity ratio.

Given how hot Huevos is, do come prepared to queue during peak hours! There is also a 60-minute dining limit at the North Bridge outlet and 90-minute dining limit at the New Bahru outlet, so plan ahead if you must!

Crowd favourites: The menus at both outlets differ slightly, so do check them out before heading down.

However, there are some classic favourites that feature across both, such as its crispy and tangy baja fish tacos (from S$15 for two tacos), loaded nachos (S$21) that have the most generous toppings, and its birria beef quesadilla (S$19) for a tender and flavourful indulgence.

You can make a reservation at Huevos at New Bahru via Chope.

2. Piedra Negra

Imbibers, Piedra Negra’s Happy Hour, where you can enjoy two bottles of beer for S$14 or two cocktails for S$20, runs very generously from 12pm to 8pm.

Crowd favourites: Indulge yourself with a frozen margarita (S$14) at its al fresco seats, while vibing to good music (which Piedra Negra proclaims as one of the best in the world)!

For some nosh, try its traditional ceviche (S$15.90) for a zesty and appetising treat. Another fun dish to have is its house-made guacamole (S$12.90) that will be assembled in front of you with the freshest of ingredients, using a stone mortar and pestle.

3. Senor Taco

For those looking for a value-for-money experience: There’s Happy Hour from 5.30pm to 8.30pm for both food and drinks items, and Ladies’ Night on Wednesdays with free drinks for the ladies during Happy Hour.

Crowd favourites: Many come here for the drinks, but if food is what you’re looking for, you’re in for a treat as well.

Try the one-metre taco sampler (S$48 during happy hour, or S$74.80 on the regular menu) for an explosion of flavours as you savour five different taco varieties. Sibarita is located in a quiet neighbourhood away from large crowds, and makes for a simple, no-frills restaurant with warm service and hearty food — the perfect choice for a cozy family night out.

Crowd favourites: A hot favourite is its crispy barramundi taco (S$15) that features buttery soft and moist fish locked in a crispy crust. Coming in close behind is its Chef’s Special chorizo quesadilla (S$15), well-loved for its cheesy and savoury goodness.

Round up your meal with piping hot loco-cocoa churros (S$6) that hit all the right spots, especially with its thick and rich homemade chocolate ganache.

5. Chimichanga

Multiple outlets islandwide.
Open: Operating hours vary across stores

Why visit? Mention Mexican food in Singapore and Chimichanga might be one of the first names to come to mind. With four outlets across the island in Little India, Holland Village, Paya Lebar and VivoCity all offering impressive fare and Mexican hospitality, it’s no wonder that it has become such a household name.

The menus of each outlet differ slightly, with VivoCity’s offerings priced slightly higher perhaps due to its prime location. Its dishes are also more coastal-themed with a parrilla (grill) section within its menu comprising not only meats, but also fish, octopus, prawns and scallops. Shrimp-ly too good, we think!

Crowd favourites: Its namesake dish chimichanga — essentially a deep-fried burrito — is definitely a good choice. Try its shredded ancho beef chimichanga (ranging from S$18 to S$23.90 across outlets) for a delightful combination of everything that’s good about Mexican cuisine.

If you visit the VivoCity outlet, consider splurging on its wagyu hanging tender carne asada (from S$36.90 for a 250g steak) for incredibly tender cubed beef chunks paired beautifully with confit potatoes and fried kale.

6. Papi’s Tacos

Multiple outlets islandwide.
Open: Operating hours vary across stores

Great vibes and even better tacos. Photo: Papi’s Tacos/Instagram

Why visit? Helmed by head chef Mauricio Espinoza, more affectionately known to all as Papi, Papi’s Tacos presents to everyone his heritage of simple and fuss-free Mexican dishes. As its name suggests, its speciality are its soft-shelled tacos but its other offerings are also certainly up to the mark.

Papi’s Tacos has a total of three outlets, mostly around central Singapore, but each outlet has its own exclusive specials. At the Tanjong Pagar outlet, you’d also get to enjoy three tacos for the price of two on its Taco Tuesdays.

Crowd favourites: Papi’s platter (S$69) is a selection of eight tacos of four different varieties — cochinita pibil (smoked pork belly), pollo (chicken), pescado (fish) and camaron (shrimp). Let’s just say we couldn’t get enough of the fish and shrimp tacos.

The platter is also great value because it comes with the Holy Trinity (from S$13 for a small portion if purchased without the platter) — which comprises fried corn tortillas, fresh tomato salsa and avocado dip.

You can make a reservation at Papi Taco’s at Tanjong Pagar, Katong and Seah Street via Chope.

7. Mami’s Tamales

55 Keong Saik Road, 01-02
Open: Sunday, Tuesday to Thursday (12pm to 2.30pm, 5pm to 11pm), Friday and Saturday (12pm to 2.30pm, 5pm to 11pm)

Mexican food Singapore
Mami’s Tamales serves up a dessert tamale inspired by desserts from chef Papi’s childhood. Photo: Abdul Rahim Anwar/HungryGoWhere

Why visit? Mami’s Tamales serves up a lesser-known traditional Mexican dish known as the tamale. A tamale is typically made from masa, a corn-based dough and stuffed with various fillings of meats, cheeses, beans and even fruits and vegetables. It is then wrapped and cooked in corn husks or banana leaves before it is served up.

A collaboration between chef Maribel Colmenares aka Mami and chef Papi (or Mauricio Espinoza) from Papi’s Taco, Mami’s Tamales wants to introduce Singaporeans to a wider range of Mexican food in Singapore such as tamales and molletes, an open-face Mexican-styled sandwich topped with refried beans and melted cheese.

It’s not your typical Mexican restaurant but that’s precisely why it’s so special. In fact, Mexicans in Singapore have also vouched for the authenticity of the flavours of the dishes here, so it’s definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to try something unique yet Mexican.

Crowd favourites: With a whole range of tamales on the menu with exciting flavours (both Mexican and Asian!), it can be hard to choose. But fret not, Mami’s tamales platter (S$58) allows you a selection of any four tamales, and a side of sour cream and salsa.

Besides that, its chorizo molletes (S$14) is also quite the flavour bomb with delicious pork sausage and toppings atop a buttery toast.

Here’s the full lowdown on Mami’s Tamales at Keong Saik

8. Comida Mexicana

404 East Coast Road
Open: Tuesday to Sunday (11.30pm to 2.30pm, 6pm to 10pm)

Why visit? Comida Mexicana is a vibrant, colourful restaurant that will transport you to Mexico with its beautiful decor, hospitality and commitment to bringing nothing but the best to the table.

With many of its ingredients hailing from Mexico itself, you can be assured that its authentic and homemade Mexican cuisine will warm your belly and heart, and trust us when we say that the food here is absolutely delightful!

Crowd favourites: Its quesdo fundido (from S$26 for the mushrooms and jalapeno variation) is a plate of cheesy goodness made out of broiled oaxaca string cheese.

Next, try its baked crab enchiladas (S$42) that’s generously stuffed with fresh crab meat and doused in a flavourful, rich sauce. And if you’re a fan of tender, juicy and flavourful beef steak, its carne asada (S$62) is a must-have.

You can make a reservation at Comida Mexicana via Chope.

9. Afterwit Mexican Tacqueria

778 North Bridge Road
Open: Monday to Sunday (12pm to 10pm)

Why visit? Afterwit Mexican Tacqueria is a cosy Mexican restaurant that’s Muslim-owned. Here, you’ll find vibrant and vivid colours in its dishes, that are both a feast for your eyes and tastebuds as well.

It has recently revamped its menu with a focus on tacos, — but the exciting part is that it’s not just a regular taco, but corn tortilla tacos that rest on a skirt of melted mozzarella cheese! But if you want more than just tacos, don’t worry, there are other items on Afterwit’s menu, too.

In case its taco-loaded menu isn’t reason enough to head down, Afterwit also serves up weekday set lunches for under S$15.

Crowd favourites: What can we say, with its current focus being on tacos, there’s no doubt that you should gun for the taco platter (S$35). It’s great value for sharing and you get to try all five taco flavours — fish, beef, lamb, chicken and vegetarian-friendly jackfruit mince (that just may be a surprising favourite!).

Tacos aside, its elotes (S$12), which is essentially a dish of corn cobs glazed with a special paprika and maple butter sauce, is simple yet pretty mind blowing. It’s even been declared by its chefs to be the most underrated item on the menu, so we’d definitely get it if we were you.

10. Super Loco

Why visit? Run by the Super Loco Group which owns several different restaurant concepts, Super Loco is a reliable spot for a chic and modern night out. Enjoy scrumptious Mexican fare and cocktails with great views either by the Singapore River at Robertson Quay, or by the Marina Bay waterfront at Customs House.

If you found yourself enjoying the nosh at Super Loco, the group also runs two other sister restaurants that also share a love for fresh and bold Mexican flavours — Lucha Loco which takes on a more casual vibe with a spotlight on coastal Mexican flavours, and Chico Loco that serves rotisserie chicken with a Mexican twist.

Crowd favourites: Super Loco does fantastic beef quesadilla (S$18) which are filled with a generous amount of soft and tender beef and slathered in a savoury, tangy sauce — such a great combination. Try its tuna tostadas (S$16) as well, for fresh, quality tuna seasoned with a delectable blend of spices and paired with creamy avocado.

You can make a reservation at Super Loco at Robertson Quay and Customs House via Chope.

11. Lavi Tapas

5 Kadayanallur Street, 01-09

Mexican food Singapore

Why visit? When you think of the word “tapas”, you’re unlikely to associate it with Mexican food in Singapore off the bat, but the new Lavi Tapas at Kada has made it work somehow. Lavi Tapas is the sister restaurant of the viral Lavi Taco, and features a twist on Mexican cuisine by reinventing some of these dishes in tapas form, and with various fusion flavours, too. The plates may be smaller, but the flavours are big and bold.

Its one-pager food menu is concise yet informative, with a choice of different tapas and tacos, or bigger platters for two pax sharing, and finally, sweet treats for a happy ending.

Crowd favourites: We’d recommend that you try as many tapas dishes as you can, because we’re not kidding when we say that everything on the menu is spectacular. For the mains, its snapper tamales (S$38) is a juicy and delectable dish that’s just a touch different from your usual meat-driven tacos, but still as yummy.

If sweets are your thing, try the pear (S$14). It’s a dessert made out of, you guessed right — a pear. Not just any pear though, it’s one that’s filled with walnut creme and perfectly balanced out by the acidity of a citrusy lemon verbena broth.

Here’s our full review of Lavi Tapas at Kada

12. Nixta Mexican Grill & Bar

116 Amoy Street
Open: Monday to Wednesday (12pm to 3pm, 5.30pm to 11pm), Thursday to Saturday (12pm to 11.30pm), Sunday (12pm to 11pm)

Mexican food Singapore
The tlayuda de la casa, which is a Nixta classic. Photo: Nixta Mexican Grill & Bar/Instagram

Why visit? Nixta Mexican Grill & Bar presents a woodfired grill concept where its meats are roasted, giving them that lovely smoky flavour. It is also where all its tacos, tlayudas and tostadas are made with heirloom Mexican corn masa that has been nixtamalised (or processed with an alkaline solution) in-house. Now you know where its name comes from!

With spectacular dishes that all promise a burst of Mexican flavour, Nixta is easily a go-to Mexican spot for those looking for authentic dishes with plenty of heart. You can also look forward to its Happy Hour on weekdays, 5pm to 7pm, when selected food and drink items go for lower prices.

Crowd favourites: It’s rare to find a taco with duck meat, but here you have the duck barbacoa taco (S$17), featuring tender duck meat that’s been infused with herbs and spices and slow-roasted in a bed of hoja santa leaf.

For something more unique, its tlayuda de la casa (S$29) is a Nixta classic that’s reminiscent of a thin crust pizza. You’ll get a blue corn tortilla base that’s topped with smoky roasted corn seasoned beautifully and cooked in a savoury, cheesy and creamy sauce. Trust us, it’s pretty mind-blowing.

13. Vatos Kitchen & Bar

City House, 01-01, 36 Robinson Road
Open: Monday to Friday (11.30am to 10pm), Saturday (5pm to 10pm)

Why visit? Check out Vatos Kitchen & Bar for Korean-Mexican fusion food if you’re looking for something that’s sure to tingle your tastebuds. Its Korean-American owners were inspired by the way Mexican street tacos in Los Angeles were fused with Korean flavours, and brought this concept into Singapore in 2016.

We especially love that aside from featuring a unique take on Mexican food in Singapore, it also features so many different promotions. On Taco Tuesdays, you can enjoy tacos of any flavour at only S$5 each (minimum two pieces). It also has weekday lunch deals (from 11.30am to 3pm) at S$14.90, as well as Happy Hour prices from 3pm to 7pm. With bar bites and drinks going at S$10 each during Happy Hour, it’s the perfect after-work hang out spot, especially if you work in the City Hall or Bugis area.

Crowd favourites: Its signature dish has to be its kimchi carnitas fries (S$20), a Vatos original that comes with a mountain of braised pork carnitas, sauteed kimchi, onions and jalapenos. Another fusion favourite is its galbi short rib tacos (S$22) that promises tender meat alongside a very flavourful combination of Korean and Mexican flavours.

You can make a reservation at Vatos Kitchen & Bar via Chope.

14. El Cocinero

Novena Regency, 01-45, 275 Thomson Road
Open: Tuesday to Sunday (10am to 9pm)

Why visit? El Cocinero is a hole-in-the-wall eatery tucked away in a little corner of Novena Regency, a stone’s throw from Novena MRT station. It may be a small place, but it packs a good punch, serving up humble but hearty Mexican fare that’s as reasonably priced as you can find for Mexican food in Singapore

It also runs a little Mexican grocer where you can order items such as tortillas, fresh or dried peppers, hot sauces, among others — perfect if you’re still craving Mexican after your meal.

Crowd favourites: Both its carnitas tacos (S$11) and barbacoa tacos (S$11.50) are popular choices. Regardless of your choice of protein — pork shoulder or lamb shoulder, respectively — you’re guaranteed tender, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

If you’re the type that needs to end your meal on a sweet note, its peach carlotas (S$5) is a fruity, creamy cake that is satisfyingly refreshing.

15. Margarita’s

11 Dempsey Road, 01-19

Flavours that speak louder than words. Photo: Margarita’s/Instagram

Why visit? Located in the charming Dempsey Hill, Margarita’s is a lovely restaurant with a classy ambience. Its beautiful location is also befitting of its heritage as possibly the oldest Mexican restaurant in Singapore.

With both traditional as well as seasonal dishes, Margarita’s menu will certainly keep you coming back for more! Portions here are also large and generous, so come with ample stomach space. Let’s also not forget its luscious margaritas (from S$22 per glass) that the restaurant is so aptly named after.

Crowd favourites: It’s pretty well known for the original “Kitchen Sink” burrito (S$28) that comes with all the works — you’d get chicken, beef, chorizo, all the toppings. Basically, everything, but the kitchen sink!

Its fajitas (S$38) is another favourite, and come with a choice of chicken or beef.

You can make a reservation at Margarita’s via Chope.

16. Guzman Y Gomez

Multiple outlets islandwide.
Open: Operating hours vary across stores

Why visit? Presently the largest chain of Mexican food in Singapore, Guzman Y Gomez currently has 20 restaurants islandwide, so it’s easily the most reliable and convenient choice if you’re craving a quick Mexican fix. Serving up flavourful Mexican dishes in a convenient and casual setting, Guzman is always ideal for a no-frills yet hearty meal that does not break the wallet.

Despite its many outlets and lower price point, it does not cut any corners on quality, though. You can be assured of fresh ingredients and authentic Mexican flavours in every bite, as well as healthy, clean food without any preservatives and additives. How’s that for dedication to its craft?

Crowd favourites: A burrito bowl (from S$10.30 for a mini bowl, depending on your choice of protein) is an awesome choice if you prefer to keep your fingers clean. If you prefer something lighter, its salad (from S$10.90 for a mini bowl, depending on your choice of protein) is a healthier option that does not compromise on flavours.

17. Cafe Iguana

Why visit? Cafe Iguana is where you will find fantastic food, zesty drinks and nothing but good vibes. Combine this with excellent service and a stunning view of the Singapore River at its Riverside Point outlet in Clarke Quay, it’s no surprise why it’s always been a favourite when it comes to Mexican food in Singapore.

The menus at both its Riverside and Orchard outlets are similar in pricing but differ slightly in a few of their dishes. Nevertheless, what is definitely consistent is the beautifully seasoned food that’s prepared and served, and the 100% agave tequila that it uses in its margaritas for that natural sweetness.

Crowd favourites: Its chimichangas, made with a lovely crust, come highly raved and promise a good mouthful of fillings and toppings. Both outlets offer the choice of a barbacoa beef chimichanga (S$28) or the chipotle prawn chimichanga (S$28).

Its tequila chicken (S$28) that has been marinated in a zingy mix of tequila and lime juice is another dish that is a must-try, whether or not you’re a tequila lover.

You can make a reservation at Cafe Iguana at Riverside Point and Orchard Rendezvous Hotel via Chope.

Besides its legacy, Cha Cha Cha is known for its colourful yet classic interior, lively atmosphere and fabulous service. Along with its extensive food and drinks menu, you can be sure that any evening at Cha Cha Cha will be a fun and top-notch dining experience for sure.

Crowd favourites: Go for its shredded beef chimichanga (S$19), which is perfectly crunchy on the outside and packed full of flavour inside. Another noteworthy dish would be its pulled pork quesadilla (S$16), that’s nicely filled with well-seasoned pork and very cheesy.

If you drink, the margaritas (from S$10 during Happy Hour) here are not only extremely yummy but also very reasonably priced. Happy Hour begins from 11.30am to 8pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and goes on all night long on Sundays and Mondays.
