World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 announced: Four Singapore bars make the cut with Jigger & Pony second-highest in Asia

Barhoppers, here’s some exciting news: The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 rankings have just been announced!

This is the 16th edition of the prestigious award rankings, an annual affair where the creme de la creme of the bar scene are brought together and recognised for their efforts.

The World’s 50 Best Bars ceremony returned to Europe for 2024 — after being hosted right here in Singapore in 2023, the first time in Asia — and was held on October 22 at the Madrid Arena,Spain.

For those who weren’t aware: Despite our small size, the Singapore bar scene has historically done very well in the ranking.

So, how did 2024’s edition of World’s 50 Best Bars go down?

Four Singapore bars in World’s 50 Best Bars

The top spot for the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 rankings goes to Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City while Hong Kong’s Bar Leone, which had clinched the top spot in this year’s Asia 50 Best Bars rankings in July, comes in at second.

At the same time, Singapore is the most represented city in Asia, with a total of four bars finding their way onto the list — not bad for a small city, eh?

Off the top, iconic Japanese-style cocktail bar Jigger & Pony came in strong with a splendid No. 5 position.

At the same time, stalwarts Nutmeg & Clove, known for creatively incorporating local flavours, came in at No. 28 while the glamorous Atlas earned itself a No. 43 spot.

Interestingly enough, the last Singapore bar to make it onto the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 rankings is Analogue Initiative at Chijmes, placed at no. 47.

Just recently, the bar had announced that it will be operating only until November 15, due to unsustainable leasing demands at the popular tourist destination.

It’s unsure when, or if, the bar will reopen at a new venue following that — so visit while you still can!

Outside of Singapore, other Asian cities also did well for themselves — Seoul’s Zest found itself at no. 9, being one of the three Asian bars (aside from Singapore and Hong Kong) that made it to the top 10. 

Closer to home, Bangkok and Hong Kong claimed two spots each on the overall rankings.

Three more Singapore bars on extended 51 to 100 list

Although the name implies only 50 entries, an extended 51 to 100 list has also become a yearly fixture since 2021. 

Other than the four Singapore bars that made the cut for the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024, three other local bars were also featured in the extended list that was announced on October 8.

Cat Bite Club, an agave-focused bar in Duxton, comes in at no. 56 while Native, a bar renowned for its creative hyper-local approach to mixology, and Nighthawk, a moody modern speakeasy at Tanjong Pagar, come in at no. 67 and no. 74 respectively.

Including these three, we have a total of seven bars being recognised amongst the 100 best bars in the world — very impressive!
