You might remember the bright yellow branding and wallet-friendly gourmet burgers that once drew crowds at places such as Golden Mile and 313 Somerset.

After a two-year hiatus, halal gourmet burger specialist, Burgs, is back, albeit with a different look.

With a new standalone storefront — nestled in the heart of Singapore’s heritage district along Arab Street — it’s serving up burgers that are bigger, bolder, and better than ever, under a distinct red sign.

The menu at Burgs has been refreshed, but the brand’s commitment to quality remains. Everything is still made in-house — from the freshly baked brioche buns to the hand-pounded beef patties.

There’s also a new signature burger sauce — a caramelised onion puree infused with chicken skin, paired with a local-style relish made from pickled green chilies, that adds a kick of spice.

While some of the old favourites — the classic cheese burger, beef bacon cheese burger and hot & spicy chicken burger — are making a reappearance, new creations such as the Big Bird, a crispy fried chicken burger, and Fish & Chips, a battered fish burger with smoked tartar sauce, are making a debut.

If you’re in search of a tried-and-true classic cheeseburger, The Original (S$11.90) is the one to try — it stood out to me the most. A riff off Burg’s OG classic cheeseburger, but with a souped up sauce, this burger now features a succulent, well-balanced beef patty layered with its signature sauce, melty American cheese, and with a local twist — pickled green chilies much like the ones you’d find in a comforting bowl of hor fun, instead of jalapenos.

Although the patty leaned slightly dry, the flavours still came together nicely.

Another standout was the Big Bird (S$11.90) — a juicy, succulent fried chicken burger tucked between two fluffy, house-made brioche buns.

It’s layered with a refreshing purple cabbage slaw that adds a crisp bite and mild sweetness to balance the richness of the chicken, and drenched in sriracha mayo that’s spicy, sweet, and satisfyingly creamy.

Sides worth mentioning include Burgs’s Nuggies (from S$4.80). These were actually bite-sized chunks of chicken thigh that come in two flavours: Original or spicy seaweed. It was well-seasoned and crisp, making them dangerously addictive.

All sides can be paired with Burgs’ house-made dipping sauces (S$1 each) — ranch, spicy nacho cheese, curry, and spicy kicap manis. While all were enjoyable, we really liked the kicap manis, which delivered a familiar spicy kick reminiscent of those served at many Malay restaurants.

There’s also the homemade black lemonade (S$4.90), a refreshing citrus drink with a strange hue: Black. Laced with charcoal, this is said to aid digestion after a rich, heavy meal.

The taste seemed intentionally mild, likely meant to offer a light, cleansing finish against the richness of the burgers and sides.

Dessert didn’t disappoint either — the banana and peanut butter pie (S$3.90) turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The blend of banana and peanut butter offered a nostalgic nod to goreng pisang, but with a rich, nutty twist that complemented the sweetness beautifully.

We also tried the fresh mango sorbet (S$4.90), which was rich in natural mango flavour — not overly sweet, but perfectly balanced with a light, tangy finish. The addition of chewy nata de coco bits added a pleasant texture, making it the perfect treat after a flavour-packed meal.

That’s not all. Burgs is introducing a new way to enjoy your evenings with its monthly DJ nights. Think burgers, beats, and a lively atmosphere all under one roof. I even caught myself nodding along to the beats, while enjoying my burger.

If you’re in the area on International Burger Day (May 28), you can enjoy 50% off your second Burgs burger with every order of a full-priced one.

The burgers were decent — not the best on the market, but still enjoyable considering the price point. With affordable gourmet options, surprisingly tasty desserts, and late-night hours, Burgs is worth checking out for an easy burger fix in town.

This was a hosted tasting.
