Aifokato by Tofu G Gelato: Customisable affogato takeaway spot in the CBD

Heard of Tofu G, the brand known for its tofu gelato? After debuting at Mandarin Gallery last year, it quickly followed up with a second outlet at Takashimaya earlier this year.

Now, the brand is introducing a fresh concept to Singapore: Aifokato — a takeaway spin-off that specialises in affogatos, which typically sees gelato topped with a shot of espresso.

At Aifokato, diners can mix and match their preferred gelato with a base beverage of their choice – and not just coffee!

Located in Telok Ayer, the Aifokato outlet sits within the bustling CBD. The cosy space comes with a small outdoor seating area, featuring about four tables — ideal for a quick catch-up or a short dessert break.

The menu features four gelato flavours — vanilla, pistachio, matcha, and chocolate — paired with bases such as espresso, matcha, or chocolate for a customisable treat.

Each cup is priced at S$10 for a gelato and a pour.

First, your choice of gelato is carefully scraped into the paper cup, forming four walls with a hollow centre. Then, the drink is poured in, where it fills the crevices and gently mixes with the cold gelato.

You are advised to scoop the gelato from the sides of the cup into the drink, so you can enjoy both together before it melts. As the drink is piping hot, the gelato melts quite quickly — so it’s best enjoyed immediately!

Customisable pairings

With such a playful concept, we tried mixing and matching as many permutations as we could!

Surprisingly, the standout pairing was the chocolate gelato with a matcha pour — rich and indulgent, with just enough earthy bitterness from the matcha to cut through the richness.

Conversely, the matcha gelato with a chocolate base worked pretty well, too — the matcha flavour was bold and distinct, pairing well with the richness of the chocolate. This combination leans more matcha-forward, unlike the other way around, where the chocolate gelato tends to overpower the matcha pour.

It’s definitely one to go for if you’re a matcha lover.

Another pairing we enjoyed was the vanilla gelato with espresso — a simple, yet indulgent option, delivering a classic coffee profile with a chilled, creamy twist. It leans slightly bitter from the espresso, with the vanilla adding a light touch of sweetness.

The last combination we tried was the pistachio gelato with espresso, though we weren’t big fans — the espresso ended up overpowering the pistachio, leaving the gelato tasting rather mild and lacking the nutty depth we were looking for.

Overall, Aifokato offers a charming concept that works well for a quick catch-up or a convenient takeaway — perfect for those in the CBD looking for a short, indulgent break during the workday.

Just be quick though, the gelato melts fast!
