Trying out Yum Cha’s signature items
If you’re a dim sum lover and don’t quite know where to start among its anniversary signature specials, here’s what we recommend: For starters, the scallop roll in filo dough (two pieces for S$2.40) is a crispy treat that’ll delight any scallop or fried dim sum lover.
The dim sum’s light and crispy texture is a result of it being covered with finely-sliced filo pastry, coating a generous lump of scallop flesh. It also comes with a small wad of cheese, giving you a nice mix of textures — crispy, bouncy and springy — all in one small package.
Dim sum traditionalists must order the black garlic shrimp dumplings (two pieces for S$2.40). The “black garlic” may deter some, but the garlic taste is actually relatively subtle, and instead adds depth to the otherwise-normal shrimp filling.
The painted-on gold strokes on the charcoal-black dumpling skin also gives a bit of an extravagant look, slightly elevating the usual dim sum classic.
Tangerine has been a token of good fortune in Chinese culture. The lucky tangerine fried prawn balls (S$2.40) recreate the look of a plump tangerine, combining crispy, sweet skin with a savoury prawn filling.
Exclusive anniversary bao creation at Yumcha
Besides its signature items, Yum Cha is also offering yet another exclusive item from now till until November 30 — the intricately-crafted Yum Cha teapot bao (S$2.40 per piece).
Shaped like a teapot, this bao is a nod to the essence of yum cha culture — tea. Each teapot bao is painstakingly crafted by hand (and we understand it’s also done by the same chef, for consistency), and there are only 50 pieces available per day.
The bao pastry is tender and comes with a fragrant filling that is a blend of osmanthus and premium oolong tea. Digging into it, we felt like we were biting into a mooncake, only softer and more subtle in flavour.
This was an invited tasting.
