Our sandy shores might be known for their heat and humidity all year round, but that doesn’t dampen our appetite for sizzling hotplates.

PepperGrill, a new hotplate concept by BreadTalk, has just opened at the group’s headquarters in Tai Seng. It serves up an array of mouthwatering hotplate set meals that promise great value and a good bet for satisfying those hearty cravings.

New hot kid on the block

When we popped by at lunch on a Tuesday, the Food Republic at BreadTalk IHQ was already buzzing with the lunch crowd.

Spotting PepperGrill was a breeze — its queue and eye-catching grilling showcase near the food court’s entrance made it hard to miss.

If you’re familiar with such hotplate concepts, you’ll know there’s a little bit of a show to watch as you wait for your turn — portions of ingredients being meticulously measured and ladled out, then served fresh onto sizzling dishes.

Having opened not too long ago in August, PepperGrill has since caught the eye of office-folk and residents in the area.

The menu is simple and straightforward — there’s six set meals, each comprising a main dish, salad, miso soup, rice, and fruit, priced between S$8.90 and S$13.50.

The sizzling goodness

We were met with a long line of hungry patrons, but it moved quickly and we were served our food promptly.

Even amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy food court, the mouthwatering smells from PepperGrill’s stall wafted through the air, beckoning diners from all directions.

The pepper beef hotplate (S$13.50), is a bestseller here. It features a generous ribeye cut that’s said to be sourced from Brazil. The beef was sliced to a good thickness — it remained juicy and tender, with a firm bite — and came sizzling in a tried-and-true pairing of pepper sauce.

Craving a bit of tang and spice? The kimchi pork hotplate set (S$9.90) is your go-to. The tender pork belly slices, paired with appetising kimchi sauce, make for an irresistible combination with rice.

For those not in the mood for red meat, PepperGrill offers a variety of protein options such as kimchi squid (S$10.50), teriyaki salmon (S$12.50), and chicken (S$8.90). The mapo tofu hotplate (S$8.90) is also a crowd favourite, comprising a sizable square of tofu drenched in hot sauce, with minced pork.

Robust and generous sides

We find that each set works pretty well for a hearty and well-balanced meal, thanks to the robust and generous sides and carb dishes — our food trays were filled to the capacity!

There’s a heaping mound of cabbage salad, dressed in goma (sesame) sauce, for those much-needed veggies, as well as a small bowl of miso soup, with tofu and seaweed.

Each set also comes with a bowl of plain rice, but for an extra treat, you can top-up to get a butadon (S$2.50, rice bowl with pork slices) or gyudon (S$3.50, rice bowl with beef slices).

We love that the meal concludes on a refreshing note with a piece of watermelon, to cut through the heft of the proteins.

This was a hosted tasting.
