April Fool’s 2025 specials: Durian pizza, durian mala bao and pork loin milkshake

Did you hear that McDonald’s has launched a durian burger? No?
Sike! It’s the first of April. Happy April Fool’s Day!
We love April Fool’s — every year, we see our favourite F&B establishments pull out all the stops to entertain their fans with the quirkiest, weirdest fake food ideas on their social media.
We wish some of these were real so we could actually try them — here are some of our favourite April Fool’s food pranks!
Casa Vostra’s durian pizza

Italian food lovers would be familiar with Casa Vostra. The Raffles City restaurant has seen long lines every night since it opened, and is probably one of the hottest pizzerias in Singapore.
What is it? The “all-new” pizza Duriangela that is topped with San Marzano DOP tomatoes, creamy fior di latte and parmigiano reggiano, but also finished with durian flesh for extra odious/fragrant punch.
Would we try it? Durian and pizza doesn’t sound like it would work, but there’s a teeny bit of potential, especially if chef-owner Antonio takes the time to R&D it.
Sen-Ryo’s miniature sushi

Sen-Ryo is a popular sushi restaurant that hails from Japan and first opened at Ion Orchard in 2021. It’s known for its swanky decor and reasonably priced offerings.
What is it? A meal for ants? Sen-Ryo’s entry for this year’s April Fool’s is a miniature sushi omakase, with sushi that look like they’ve been shrunk down with a shrink ray. How adorable!
Would we try it? An omakase is an omakase. With how pricey omakase meals can get, this might be one of our few chances to indulge without breaking the bank!
Butahage’s butadon milkshake

Butadon is Butahage’s specialty. It’s a famous brand hailing from Hokkaido and serves up authentic Hokkaido pork bowls made with a secret sauce with 90 years of history!
What is it? The brand’s signature Obihiro Meibutsu butadon condensed into a butadon milkshake, blending the pork loin, secret sauce, and green peas.
Would we try it? Hard pass. Pork loin chunks and peas in a milkshake sound like disaster. Would be morbidly curious, if they ever launch a milkshake with that secret sauce inside though!
Wo Wo Dian’s mala durian bao

Where is this? Wo Wo Dian is a storied restaurant that comes from the Sichuan region and has history dating back to the Qing Dynasty! It specialises in steamed buns and rice noodles and is located at Raffles City.
What is it? The brand’s fluffy bao skin, wrapped around chunky durian flesh, emboldened with a splash of mala juice for one interesting mala durian bao.
Would we try it? If you ask us, durian and mala sound like a disaster for the digestive system and would only recommend it, if you’ve got an iron tummy!
