Homegrown coffee brand Mr Kopi announces sudden closure of first physical outlet at Bedok
Located at Bedok’s Djitsun Mall, homegrown coffee brand Mr Kopi has quietly been serving up robust cuppas at affordable prices (with prices starting at just S$2.10), since March 2022.
It had garnered a relatively strong following from residents and students, as well as on the delivery platforms by caffeine-starved individuals needing a good coffee kick.
However, two days ago, Mr Kopi took to social media to announce that the shop was “moving out of Bedok” with its last day of operations on Feb 19.
Co-founder Alvin Lee, tells us that the team had observed a change in the business landscape, alluding to rental woes.
He is nonetheless optimistic about the future of Mr Kopi. “We will be restructuring Mr Kopi into a cloud kitchen concept to supply (coffee to) cafes, kiosks… vending machines targeting the whole of Singapore,” he adds.
The brand, started by three friends who are self-professed coffee addicts (or coffeeholics), first came about by happenstance.
Alvin, Jack Tan and Ahtesham, all aged 35, were hanging out at Jack’s office space during the Covid-19 pandemic when they began experimenting with brewing traditional coffee powder using a regular espresso machine.
The trio realised they had created something they hadn’t quite tasted before in Singapore and saw the potential to turn this into something bigger.
Jack had previously attended culinary school and had prior F&B experience, Ahtesham (or Ahtes) had helmed and invested in several startups, while Alvin was working in an MNC — each had a varied skill set that value-added to specific aspects of the business.
When we last spoke to the team in end-2023, the team had cited initial difficulties in securing a spot in larger shopping malls as the brand was relatively unknown back then.
It took time, but it had slowly but surely built up a reputation serving up cuppas and satisfyingly quick nosh from its small Bedok kiosk, so news of its closure might come as a shock to some fervent regulars.
If you’ve not tried Mr Kopi yet, you have till Monday to get your hands on its seemingly addictive brews.
Some standouts on its menu include the Mr Kopi Heartbeat cold brew (S$5.90), which comes with a higher caffeine content than its regular cold brew, its rustic Hainan cold brew (S$4.50), as well as its power-packed Mr Kopi bulletproof white and black coffees (S$2.90 and S$2.60 respectively), which come with a slab of premium unsalted butter in your drink.
If you need some food to soak in all of that coffee, we enjoyed its cream cheese otah toast (S$3), XXL Hainanese chicken (S$6.50), which also comes in a wrap form (S$5.90).
HungryGoWhere understands there isn’t a fixed date for the brand’s relaunch as a cloud kitchen concept yet, so pop by while you still can or order from the brand on delivery platforms such as GrabFood.
